Youth Connect is the schools and youth outreach programme run by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions as a means of engaging young people with the trade union movement. As the Dublin Region Youth Connect Champion, I am responsible for coordinating the programme for the Dublin region. This role includes a number of different responsibilities:Coordinating all visits to teach workshops - I coorindate visits to Dublin secondary schools, YouthReach centres, and further education colleges. Classes that I would frequently teach include Leaving Cert Applied, Leaving Cert Vocational Programme, Leaving Cert Business, Leaving Cert History, Junior Cert History, and Junior Cert CSPE, as well as speaking to Transition Year work experience students. This is heavily based on outreach and networking within the education sector and community. Delivering a variety of workshops and teaching programmes on workers' rights and trade unions to inform young people of their rights in the workplace and highlighting the benefits of trade union membership. Other workshops taught as part of the Youth Connect programme include Rights and Responsibilities; Equality; Fair Trade; and the 1913 Lockout. These workshops use a variety of different media, such as worksheets and video content, with the aim of interactivity to maximise student participation.Teaching specific modules in further education colleges - I teach specifically designed modules in further education colleges to inform students of issues in their specific sectors and how unions are dealing with them. These courses would often include childcare and early years education; pre-nursing; and social care.Pre-organising further education students by ensuring that students are aware of the benefits of joining a union once they qualify, that they know which unions to join, and know how to do so.

The National Chairperson of Labour Youth is responsible for all political direction and management of the Labour Party's youth wing, comprised of members of the party under the age of 30. This was a multi-faceted role with many areas of responsibility.Public Relations - As the head of public relations for Labour Youth, I was responsible for managing social media platforms; releasing timely press statements on fast-paced political issues; managing media relations; and responsible for all internal communications. I created all online content for Labour Youth's social media, designing graphics and using video to create fresh and unique content. I also acted as the face of the organisation for all public appearances, including interview in radio, TV, and print, as well as regular public speaking at conferences and panel events.Political Director of Labour Youth - I lead and assisted the National Executive in their work; implemented recruitment strategies for increasing and engaging membership; and organised and executed campaign initiatives. During this time I launched a campaign to end pay discrimination for young people by ending the use of sub-minima rates under the National Minimum Wage Act and to reverse cuts to entry-level public sector pay. I was also responsible for the drafting of all lobbying briefing notes, and finalising all policy papers. Overall Management of Labour Youth - Management of the finances and allocation of the annual budget of the organisation, ensuring that spending is managed effectively and fundraising targets are met, coordinating and managing of Labour Youth events, including our annual Tom Johnson Summer School; campaign and policy launches; coordinating with the senior party on youth participation for the Leaders' Tour for the 2016 general election; all training workshops; and our annual youth conference.

The National Campaigns Officer for Labour Youth is responsible for all campaigns, both internal and external, run by the organisation. This role had a number of different aspects: Creating Campaign Strategies - I am experienced in creating large-scale campaign strategies both for membership outreach, increasing public awareness of an issue. I ran Labour Youth's campaigns for the marriage equality referendum, to end zero hours contracts, and to increase youth social welfare rates. These campaigns were both internal, focused on lobbying within the Labour Party and increasing awareness among members, and also external, focusing on increasing public participation with an issue.Briefing Labour Youth - I am experienced hosting events to increase awareness and knowledge of an issue in Labour Youth, including events such as a briefing meeting on zero hours contracts with external speakers, and a training workshop to brief members on canvassing with the 2016 General Election Manifesto. Lobbying Internally - Experienced and successful track record in lobbying Government Departments for policy change. Campaigns include lobbying the Minister for Social Protection on youth welfare rates, Minister for Jobs on zero hours contracts and lobbying the Head of Manifesto Development for the Labour Party for inclusion of an increase to youth welfare, the lowering the cost of higher education, and an introduction of grants for young farmers in the 2016 General Election Manifesto.

Academic tutors assist with university learning in a classroom environment to enhance lecture content with a small group focus.As an academic tutor in UCD I created lesson plans around outlined academic content; facilitated classroom debate on core course topics; used continuous assessment goals throughout the semesters to ensure maximum student engagement with the course; gave feedback to students on their assessment as the semester progressed; and corrected continuous assessment, in the form of presentations, essays, and debates, as well as correcting end of year exam papers.

As Gender Equality Officer for UCDSU, I was responsible for the management of campaigns, events, and projects around gender equality for a university of 24,000 students. Most of my term in this role revolved around campaigning for marriage equality, both locally on-campus and nationally. I was a director for an on-campus referendum campaigning for a yes vote to marriage equality. This included team management and organisation, as well as campaigning both in person and online. This referendum was overwhelmingly passed with 94% of students voting yes. The marriage equality campaign expanded further after, with the launch of our hashtag #VoteForME, encouraging students to tell personal stories as part of the build-up to the national referendum on marriage equality. This role also included regular report writing for Student Council; addressing lectures to inform students of upcoming events and issues; and working at SU events.
