I supported middle school teachers and students during in-person learning. I initially focused on finding ways to keep the community safe including: creating "Among Us" tasks to occupy students during breaks; scavenger hunts in the courtyard and pool noodle skirts to encourage physical distancing. My role evolved to include substituting, directing student.

Namibia

I lived in a remote, picturesque settlement in northern Namibia. I taught Math, Sciences and elective classes to select grades 5-9. My classes had an average size of 45 learners (63 was my largest class). When I wasn't working with learners I played netball in my community, visited my host mom, enjoyed long runs through the Savannah and practiced.

After two 10-month terms as an SCA member with the American glass eel project, I took on a leadership role with more responsibilities including: managing 700+ volunteers, training 1700+ students, coordinating volunteering at 14 research sites and mentoring an SCA member.Outside of the eel project I lead environmental education programs, analyzed eel.

Hudson Valley, NY

In early spring a wave of transparent, wiggling American glass eels migrate from the Sargasso Sea to rivers along the east coast, like the Hudson River Estuary. In 2016 I took part in this migration, in a scientific sense. I helped coordinate a citizen science project across 14 research sites along the Hudson River. I educated and trained volunteers, often.

A Trans-Atlantic Voyage

As a deckhand I was responsible for mentoring 6 other students on my watch, leading by example but also conducting tutorials. We sailed from the Canary Islands (off the coast of Morocco) to Dominica (Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean). The trans-Atlantic voyage took 29 days, some portions were completed entirely with Polynesian navigation.

As a deckhand I worked with the 5 students in my watch as we sailed from Cork Ireland to Mallorca, Spain-making stops in Douarnenez, France, Lisbon, Portugal and Cadiz, Spain. I was responsible for mentoring students in basic sail handling and ship protocols including furling, line handling and chores. After the students left, I participated in a month.

Hudson River Estuary

During day sails I facilitated education stations with participants ranging from 4th graders to adults. Stations included navigation, fish collected from our seine net, water quality, history and art. As a crew member I learned to be adaptive, respectful and flexible while co-habitating with 12 other crew while sailing up and down the Hudson River Estuary.
