About Grace Chuang

I’m a mix of all things interdisciplinary: a Taiwanese-American scientist-by-training turned creative director. From 2018 to 2022, I led brand and design at Ginkgo Bioworks, where I told stories of futures built with biology and shaped the aesthetic of the field—everything from starting an award-winning biology magazine, Grow, to shepherding the company's brand through the largest IPO of a biotech startup ever. Now through my own business I work on visioning, strategizing, and executing creative projects for brands and organizations at the intersection of tech, biology, and design. I do this because I believe that interdisciplinarity and the visualization of technology—how we see and understand processes through creative formats—can ultimately drive change in the world. I am a frequent speaker and educator and have spoken at universities and conferences including New York University, Rice University, and SynBioBeta, while also teaching branding to entrepreneurs through Deep Science Ventures. In 2021, I was one of three fellows selected for The Future of Science Film Fellowship, a program for emerging filmmakers to concept documentaries around efforts to make science more equitable and inclusive. In 2024, I founded The Biocreative Index, a directory and community of people working at the intersection of biology and creative disciplines. My work has been recognized by the Art Directors Club, Webbys, Society of Publication Designers, and PRINT, and I was inducted into the class of Young Guns in 2024 as one of the top creatives under 30 in the world.I received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering summa cum laude from Cornell University, where I spent my time coaxing mammalian cells, exploring biology with architects, producing films, and photographing stories of love, heartbreak, triumph, and resilience. I have been carving my own path at the intersection of things ever since.Let’s work together! gracechuang.me

I co-founded Grow in 2019 as a space for diverse voices to tell creative stories about biology. In Grow’s first few months I built the magazine entirely from the ground up, everything from designing the first issue and defining the brand, to debuting Grow at conferences and launching our website for online orders. Since then, I've led Grow to win countless prestigious design and illustration awards and in 2022, we were even nominated for Science Breakthrough of the Year from the Falling Walls Foundation. We’ve circulated over 15,000 magazines in homes, bookstores, and schools around the world, and we’re just getting started.
