I provide short-term crisis counseling, information, and referrals to social service agencies to callers on Helpline 2-1-1, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, the Florida HIV/AIDS Hotline, and the Family Health Line. We assist our callers with issues including but not limited to: homelessness, mental illness, domestic violence, suicide, substance use, HIV/AIDS, and pregnancy. Additionally, I evaluate trainee crisis counselors in group and one-on-one settings to set goals for improvement, provide constructive feedback, and assist with understanding hotline policies and procedures.

I created and implemented the Mental Health Navigator program at 2-1-1 Big Bend in partnership with the FSU College of Medicine and the United Way. The purpose of this program was to provide follow-up, care coordination, support, and advocacy for clients who were interested in receiving mental health care services. I worked with the client until they were successfully connected to services. Another component of this program was the development of a comprehensive mental health provider resource directory for the Big Bend area. Additionally, I collected data on mental health needs and barriers to treatment access across the Big Bend region of Florida, and reported this information to our funders. I communicated with partners to improve efficiency of use and accessibility of the mental health provider directory, and I attended meetings for the Big Bend Mental Health Coalition and Maternal Mental Health Coalition to help examine and identify solutions to gaps in community mental health care.

I provided pro bono mental health counseling at schools in low-income rural areas of the Big Bend. I worked one semester in a middle school, and the next semester in an elementary school. I provided mostly individual counseling, and occasionally facilitated groups. I gained proficiency in documentation, which included intake assessments, progress notes, treatment summaries, and contact logs.

Under the supervision of Dr. Jesse Cougle, I worked with several Clinical Psychology doctoral candidates on their research studies. Topics included body dysmorphic disorder and major depressive disorder. Along with my own honors thesis study, I completed the literature review for a current publication; conducted structured clinical interviews using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) and Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID-4); ran participants through complex experimental studies involving interviews, administering questionnaires, scheduling future visits, and debriefing; and recruited participants for multiple studies via community outreach and social media advertising.

-Assisted a doctoral candidate with investigating anxiety sensitivity as a risk factor for post-traumatic stress disorder (Clinical Psychology).- Conducted data entry and skin conductance response while leading participants through Combating Anxiety Sensitivity Training.

-Studied the relationship between category learning and visual perception (Cognitive Psychology).-Capped participants for EEG studies.-Presented at the 2016 FSU Undergraduate Research Symposium and the 2016 FSU Department of Psychology Undergraduate Research Day. The poster was entitled: “Neural correlates of category learning and visual perception.”
