About Grace Gretes, Ph.D. (Née Winschel)
Following completion of my two-year clerkship at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, I joined Tensegrity as an Associate focusing on district court litigation. Prior to that I served as an Associate in the Seattle and D.C. offices of WSGR, where I focused on post-grant proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.I have experience working on patent litigation, patent prosecution involving both foreign and domestic patent portfolios, freedom to operate, due diligence, and licensing matters. My patent work has covered a wide range of technologies, including pharmaceutics (structural obviousness, synthesis/process, pharmaceutical formulations, polymorphs, etc.), medical/drug delivery devices and methods of treatment, biotechnology, quantum computing, materials engineering, and genomic technologies.Prior to my work in patent law, I conducted intense research over a broad spectrum of chemistry. Although my doctoral research focused on stereoselective organocatalysis, I also have experience in carbohydrate chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry, and organic methodology, as well as computational quantum chemistry. My experience at the bench granted me expertise in designing and executing multi-step syntheses of complex molecules, including specific stereoisomers and compounds with isotopic labels. I also have vast experience conducting mechanistic investigations through bench top kinetic studies, as well as computationally. If I'm not in the courthouse, the lab, a classroom, or the office, you can probably find me on the flying trapeze or jumping out of a plane.

Graduate Student Researcher Under Dr. Pavel Nagorny
Researched the mechanism of stereoselective cyclizations including spiroketalization and an aza-Michael cyclization to form piperidines, both of which are generally proposed to proceed through an oxocarbenium/chiral phosphate ion pair. My investigations of these cyclizations catalyzed by chiral phosphoric acids (CPAs) suggest spiroketalization occurs through a concerted cyclization utilizing the bifunctionality of the CPA, whereas the aza-Michael cyclization proceeds through two elementary steps, involving the formation of a mixed chiral phosphate acetal intermediate, which then cyclizes in an SN2'-like fashion.September 2013-May 2015: Research in collaboration with Dr. Paul Zimmerman: Conducted a thorough computational investigation of an enantioselective intramolecular chiral phosphoric acid-catalyzed cyclization of unsaturated acetals for the synthesis of funtionalized chiral piperidines, the chiral enol ether products of which were found to undergo subsequent in situ enanatioenrichment due to acetalization of the minor enantiomer. A new, modified growing string computational reaction exploration method was utilized to elucidate the mechanism of this transformation, and rather than confirming the originally postulated cyclization proceeding directly through a vinyl oxocarbenium ion, my simulations identified an alternative two-step mechanism, involving the formation of a mixed chiral phosphate acetal, which undergoes a concerted, asynchronous SN2'-like displacement to yield the product. Most calculations were performed in C++ using Q-Chem 4.0. Optimized geometries were evaluated using the B3LYP density functional and double-zeta-quality basis sets with polarization and diffuse functions, designated 6-31G**. Gibbs free energies were computed through single point energy calculations using a wB97X-D exchange functional. Frequency computations were performed using B3LYP and solvent corrections were performed using the SMD solvent model in GAMESS.
Graduate Student Instructor/Mentor
September 2010-May 2011: Instructor for five sections of undergraduate Organic Chemistry discussions.September 2011 - May 2012: Instructor for two, four-hour laboratory sections for undergraduate Organic Chemistry laboratories.September 2012 - May 2013: Mentor and administrator for an entire Organic Chemistry laboratory course (~900+ students, ~30 GSIs).September 2013 - May 2014: Course Developer and Instructor for Chemistry 219. The goal of Chemistry 219 is to ensure that undergraduate course facilitators and tutors for the Introductory Organic Chemistry course (Chemistry 210) are teaching the most relevant and accurate course content.
Undergraduate Researcher
June 2009 - May 2010: Senior research involved tandem intramolecular Diels-Alder reactions (TIMDAs). Overall, my focus was a seven-step synthesis that ended with a novel TIMDA reaction to generate a tetra-cyclic system.January 2007 - August 2007: Undergraduate research focusing on analytical/physical chemistry, determining dissolved oxygen, temperature, conductivity, and pH for identifying stratification, turnover and trophic state of lakes in the local watershed.
Teaching Assistant/Laboratory Manager
September 2007 - March 2009: Teaching Assistant responsible for Fundamental, General and Organic Chemistry courses.September 2007 - May 2008: Laboratory Manager
Summer Fellow
As a summer fellow, I developed my own research project involving substituent effects on a malonaldehyde system’s intramolecular hydrogen bond length using ab initio calculations and density functional theory (DFT).
