Gis Specialist/Environmental Scientist
Current
Data Analyst Intern
As a data analyst I worked with both spatial and tabular data using ArcGIS, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Access. I digitized project areas pertaining to freight to help project prioritization. I created cartographically correct maps that display information about transportation throughout the state of Colorado. I also created and managed geodatabases that contain transportation-related feature classes. Finally, I created a methodology to identify areas of interest for commercial vehicle crash locations in order to minimize commercial vehicle crashes along Colorado's freight corridors in the future.
Graduate Teaching Assistant
I directed and graded labs and papers, and worked with students on their coursework associated with introductory physical geography classes which emphasized physical and natural hazards geography with some human-environment interactions. The labs utilized ArcGIS, and relied heavily on basic data queries. As a teaching assistant I had the sole responsibility for planning, managing, and implementing two weekly labs of 24 students each. The classes with which I have been involved are entitled Our Dynamic Earth (2014-2016), and Environmental Systems (Summer 2015).
Graduate Student Representative
In this position I served as a liason between graduate students, department faculty, and staff. One of my most important roles was to assist in organizing graduate student events to help maintain a close community within the graduate students and between the graduate students and faculty. I also worked to design and coordinate scheduling for student responsibilities regarding weekly departmental colloquium receptions that required set-up and clean-up by students. One of my other duties consisted of attending monthly faculty meetings to report back to students about events or updates within the department. This is a position in which I was elected by my fellow classmates.
Grassroots Organizing & Advocacy Intern
I coordinated campaign events specific to Colorado in order to engage citizens and pressure campaign targets. To continue momentum of the campaign, I worked to build strategic coalitions with elected officials, citizen activists, students, businesses, and local groups. I was also responsible for media outreach in terms of social media in order to help educate millions of people and keep them up-to-date on relevant events and campaigns in Colorado and across the U.S. I worked to plan a movie screening event in Colorado Springs, CO to raise awareness about the risks of increased antibiotic resistance in relation to factory farms in order to grow support in a city outside of Denver.
Part-Time Staff
As a part-time staff member I worked to organize, scan, file, and handle sensitive student material. I also helped perform basic office duties including taking inventory, handling phone calls and questions, and working to assist full-time staff and faculty in any way I could. I also worked taking on responsibilities not specifically outlined in my job duties both within my department, but also in other departments as needed.Within this position I conducted research on honors programs and honors colleges in schools across the country, and reported my results to a spreadsheet, so that the department could easily utilize my research.
Gis Research
I conducted GIS research regarding the 1896 tornado of St. Louis, Missouri. My contribution to this research was the creation of a basemap, interpretation of historical interviews and accounts for the purpose of mapping the tornado's path and destruction. I georeferenced historical maps and then heads-up digitized the historical maps from within my geodatabase for future analysis by another researcher.
Gis Lab Assistant
I assisted students with homework, assignments, or research in cartography, GIS, and remote sensing related subjects. I was also solely responsible for maintaining lab hours and monitoring the lab for technical difficulties.
