CONTACT: gracelainecarson@gmail.comGrace Carson (Yavapai/Chiricahua Apache) previously served as a Skadden Fellow for Tribal Law and Policy Institute. Her Skadden Fellowship project was focused on developing and implementing restorative justice programs for tribal communities that channels harm-doers away from incarceration and fines, and towards rehabilitation, community involvement, and healing. This project continued to build on the foundations already established in Tribal Healing and Wellness Courts, Peacemaking programs, and other Indigenous justice programs and systems. Carson graduated the University of Denver with a BA in Political Science and Journalism (2019), and graduated UCLA School of Law with specializations in Critical Race Studies, Public Interest Law and Policy, and International and Comparative Law (2022). Her current writing and scholarship are focused on restorative and transformative justice, tribal criminal law and jurisdiction, tribal court and justice innovation, critical Indigenous studies, ethnic studies, decolonization theory, and abolition theory.

    Executed my Skadden Fellowship project that was focused on developing and expanding restorative justice programs and processes for tribes that channels harm-doers away from incarceration and fines, and towards rehabilitation, community involvement, and healing. The project specifically aimed to help tribes expand restorative justice practices and processes in their Healing to Wellness Courts (tribal treatment courts). In addition to my Skadden Fellowship project, I created resources for and provided training and technical assistance (TTA) to tribes in developing and enhancing their justice systems, with a focus on implementing and enhancing Healing to Wellness Courts and Peacemaking programs. I also wrote memos and other resources on the legal issues surrounding implementation of Healing to Wellness Courts and other restorative justice systems, such as issues concerning tribal criminal jurisdiction, due process considerations, issues arising from the violent offender prohibition established in 34 U.S.C. § 10612, special considerations for juveniles in the criminal legal system, and other relevant legal issues.
