- Follows direction of field supervisors (Field Director, Crew Chief, and/or Assistant Crew Chief) in support of the research design and project execution.- Conducts fieldwork according to state and Federal historic preservation guidelines/standards for reconnaissance surveys, terrestrial surveys augmented by shovel testing, and site documentation and recordation.- Performs overland navigation using of compass and tape, and interpretation of USGS topographic maps and aerial photographic imagery.- Completes and submits requisite field paperwork: transect shovel test forms, site shovel test forms; draft field site sketch maps and feature profiles, perform photo documentation and complete photo logs, etc.- Performs data collection using hand-held GPS and/or Trimble, in addition to compass and tape.- Communicates any issue (safety, injury, heat stress, etc.) to crew chief to facilitate timely resolution.- Executes the goals of the project based on research design objectives and applicable standards of investigation safely and effectively.

The Smithsonian Cultural Rescue Initiative (SCRI) works to protect cultural heritage threatened or impacted by disasters and to help U.S. and international communities preserve their identities and history.Participated in the SCRI’s ongoing research project about the intentional destruction of cultural sites during conflict.Collected, analyzed, and coded instances of cultural destruction and cultural sites that have been, or were vulnerable to, intentional damage.The result of this project will be a data resource for future research. This effort is critical to identifying sites that may be at risk during periods of violence.
