In my role as a primary school English teacher, I planned and implemented classroom English lessons to further conversational skills for 600 K-5 students of varying skill levels. With the onset of a Covid-19 peak in Thailand, I transitioned students from in-person to virtual learning mid-year while continuing to teach to curriculum standards and provide opportunities for speaking and listening practice. Throughout my fellowship in Thailand, I built relationships with students, teachers, and community members as a cultural ambassador.

In this role, I led an open lab session one night each week to answer questions for students outside of class time. I also collaborated with other TAs to dissect and prepare human cadavers for student learning.

As an RA for twenty first-year students, I was responsible for community development and policy enforcement. In addition to serving as a resource and advisor, I rotated in an on-call schedule for the entire residence hall and managed a hall budget to plan community events.

As an undergraduate research assistant in the Health and Exercise Science Department, I assisted with the WE-CAN study of overweight, older adults with knee osteoarthritis. I updated exercise prescriptions, set up and tore down exercise intervention sessions, and built relationships with participants to encourage success in this four-year study.

Working within the Prevention Division, I assisted with various projects including needs assessment, analysis of student growth throughout prevention programming, and data interpretation. I also attended community collaboration meetings and organized student volunteer recruitment for Insight and community partner initiatives, such as the MedAssist Free Mobile Pharmacy.

Throughout this internship I worked with the entire staff at ECO City Farms to run Seed 2 Feed, a summer youth employment and education program. In addition to supervising the high school participants during daily farm work and afternoon activities, I planned engaging lessons on the intersection of food, health, and the environment and created a digital handbook of the program curriculum. My experience throughout the summer culminated in a research report on the successes and challenges of urban farms in the Chesapeake region.

As the summer research intern at The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, a camp serving children with serious illnesses, I organized the administration of camper surveys and carried out open coding of responses each session. I also assisted with new and ongoing research projects including literature review, assessment design, and the development of evaluative metrics. In addition to the research intern role, I volunteered as a counselor for the summer, helping in cabins and program areas that required additional support.

As a Pro Humanitate Intern at the Comprehensive Cancer Center, I supported cancer patients and their families by providing information; staffing a hospitality room; and offering conversation to patients undergoing chemotherapy. I also participated in weekly discussions with guest speakers who had expertise in various areas of oncology and patient care.

As one of two Student Advisors to the North Carolina State Board of Education, I attended monthly board meetings in Raleigh to give a student’s perspective on education issues facing North Carolina. In addition to contributing to slated discussion topics, I presented individual projects on foreign language education and academic integrity to the board.Present
