The sensation I experience while reading is ineffable. But, boy, do I still try to articulate the out-of-body ordeal that is reading. At the dawn of my bookish saga, my friends and I dubbed this feeling “Book World” in an attempt to manifest it into existence. In this novel place, time seems to slow. The words on the page are images playing before you like a movie. It is encompassing, thrilling, and so much more than that. This is what I want to do for a living. I want to aid in the process of delivering these otherworldly trips to readers of all ages and demographics. The first step I’ve taken toward achieving this is by being an avid reader myself (I like to say I came to it later in life—yes, middle school seems awfully behind—and I’ve been making up for lost time ever since.). Naturally this led to writing which, since my undergraduate days, has become part of my identity: Grace, appreciator of cappuccinos and capital-w “Writer.” Feeling at home in this newfound-ness, I took advantage of any and all opportunities to stretch out my creative legs. Those opportunities included getting involved at my university’s student newspaper, The Spectator; the Center for Writing Excellence where I worked as a Writing Assistant Intern and mentor; as an Editorial Intern at Volume One, an arts and culture magazine; and as an intern for both the Chippewa Valley Writers Guild, a non-profit organization set on fostering a supportive and sensational writing community within its area, and Barstow & Grand, a local literary publication that ponders the Upper Midwest experience. It was during this same time that I branched out within my academics and took on the roll of Student Researcher in a number of student-faculty projects, one of which looked into the matter of Life Writing and how Writing Centers can promote deeper and more meaningful connections between student writers and their craft, and the other concerning the rise of book bans in the United States. My research teams and I went on to present our findings at the International Writing Center Association Conference and at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research, respectively. This work propelled me to apply for graduate school where I am currently earning my Masters in Fine Arts in Creative Writing at Western Washington University. To share the wonders of the written word with others sounds awfully appealing to me, and I am more than ready to begin this next adventure in the workplace, whether that be at a journal, community college, or university.

Op/Ed EditorThe Spectator Jan 2023 - May 2023Eau Claire, Wisconsin, United StatesOrganized stories for web and print issues; edited both stories and photos for our website, and used Adobe Indesign to layout pages for print issues; and wrote weekly articles.I was very excited to take on the OP/ED Editor position. I had written OP/ED's before, of course, being the proud holder of the Book club column, but I must admit I didn't read many of them—or, not since my turn at Chief Copy Editor that is. As a Creative Writing major, I knew I would have a blast reading the articles our writers would come up with. And I did. While my previous positions engaged me with our local community by informing me on events and such, the OP/ED section allowed me to see how different people within our community respond and interact with pop culture, nostalgia and social issues—the topics weren't always reviews of the latest films. Through this experience, I have realized how criminally underrated the OP/ED section is—in my opinion (see what I did there?), OP/ED's provide an honest insight into human nature and act as a snapshot of what people in our little pocket of the universe are like.

Currents EditorThe Spectator Sep 2022 - Dec 2022Eau Claire, Wisconsin, United StatesBudgeted and organized stories for upcoming web and print issues; edited stories and photos, posted them to website, and laid out pages for print through Adobe Indesign; and wrote weekly articles. As my first time holding a section editor position, my time as Currents Editor got me more involved with the community around me. As I went about my day, I was thinking of story ideas to pitch at the next meeting, learning about events happening around me, and becoming a better community member by staying connected and aware of what is going on around me. I assigned stories I thought writers would enjoy, ones that got them out into the community and interacting with those around them. Their commitment reflected in their writing and the editing process was so much more enjoyable when it was clear the writer cared about their work. What a joy this semester was.

English As A Second Language Teaching AssistantUniversity Of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Jan 2023 - May 2023Eau Claire, Wisconsin, United StatesMet with international students from China weekly to assist them with assignments, discuss and work through trouble areas of ESL, and answer questions about American culture and culture shock. Gave out participation grades and wrote journal entries to their professors about the sessions. It was an absolute joy working with the international students. Helping them with their writing led me to reflect on the functions of the English language in ways I had never done before—not even when I was studying abroad myself! In our discussions of culture shock, I learned not only the differences in American and Chinese culture, but more impressive, all the similarities we share. While it could be difficult to communicate, generally speaking, what seem to be "the basics" of academic writing in American schools, it taught me to have more patience and to circumnavigate the heady concepts we often encountered in their English acquisition journey. I truly loved getting to know them all. -
InternBarstow & Grand Jan 2023 - May 2023Eau Claire, Wisconsin, United StatesManaged website by publishing interviews with local authors. Did outreach to the University's English Department. Edited and proofread submissions and pieces chosen for publication. Marketed and strategized sales. While at Barstow & Grand I learned the value of staying organized and self-motivated while doing remote work. Despite the work being virtually done, I was still able to connect with authors and poets from around the Upper Midwest area, folks I wouldn't have had the pleasure of meeting were it not for this internship. Their stories, while different in form and content, are united by the one thing we share: a passion for the Midwest and the people in it.

Undergraduate Research AssistantMcintyre Library Sep 2022 - May 2023Eau Claire, Wisconsin, United StatesInvestigated trends, patterns, and consistencies surrounding banning books in both the United States and rest of the world. Read several banned books for The Subversive Book Club and analyzed why banned, their arguments, and what those challenging want to achieve. Hosted The Subversive Book Club by preparing discussion questions. Created curriculum to be used in classrooms. Designed and managed LibGuide page. The research I have done alongside the librarians has been some of the most rewarding—and fun!—work I've done while attending UWEC. My duties in the position asked that I be curious, ask questions, and read. What more could a girl ask for! It's a greedy position, one where my information-hungry self got satisfied through research dives, thoughtful group discussions, and in-depth reading. The work we did was important and we even presented this information at UWEC's National Conference on Undergraduate Research.

Writing AssistantCenter For Writing Excellence Aug 2020 - May 2023Eau Claire, Wisconsin, United StatesCollaborated with students over their writing and other projects by identifying grammatical and structural errors. Articulated corrections and discussed ways to enhance writing and overall experience. Actively listened to writer's goals and aided them in achieving those goals.During my time at the Writing Center, I have had the privilege of working with over 100 students on projects spanning across a variety of areas and disciplines, becoming one of the most frequently requested Writing Assistant Interns. From poetry to geography, I have served as a resource for the students of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. However, I have also learned as much from them as they have from me — with each session, I learn something new, satiating my immense hunger for learning. When all is said and done, I love my job, very much.
