TRANSTION TO INTERPOD DUE TO CLINICAL EXPERIENCE ;~99% of orthotics don’t need to be ‘custom made’ - only deformed foot types need a true custom orthotic~For the everyday ‘normal’ foot the shape/ morphology is not considered in the design of the orthotic or orthotic arch~Plaster casting or scanning of the foot gives the length and width of the orthotic, but this can be given by shoe size. It does not provide ‘custom or personalization’.~Orthotics act to invert the foot to provide support,the greater the inversion the more support. ~Orthotic support is increased by increasing rearfoot wedging, arch height and material stiffness~The amount of orthotic support needed depends on Px weight (30%) and the location of the Subtalar Joint Axis. This is easily measured by doing a supination resistance test or using a digital Keystone device.~Orthotics are used to treat overuse symptoms and the amount of exercise needed to become an ‘overload’ depends on the individual ~Orthotics can be used in the short, medium or long term- depending on the Px. ~Some Px’s dont want to rest or decrease volume- they want to continue to exercise - these are the potential long term orthotic users.~Methods such as Plaster cast, CNC or 3D printing make Custom orthotics expensive. Injection moulding is cost effective - Orthotic prescription for 99% of Pxs is : 1. Foot size ( shoe size)2.
