  Now retired but was a member of the Fire Investigation Unit for 12 years, 10 of those as a Watch Manager. Prior to this I was operational for eighteen years at various stations in Edinburgh and West Lothian.During my time within the Unit I have been either lead investigator or supported my team in approximately four hundred level 1 and 2 investigations. Investigations of such incidents require a systematic approach and knowledge and understanding of fire behaviour, chemistry and dynamics.I have worked on a full range of fire investigations including fatal, domestic, commercial, industrial property and vehicles. I am responsible for producing both summary and full reports for all incidents I attend. I appear at court when requested as an expert witness.I carry out fatal fire investigations working jointly with Police Scotland. I determine the origin and cause so assisting the Police and Procurator Fiscal in deciding whether there are any suspicious circumstances. The outcome and findings from the report produced is also used by the Prevention and Protection Directorate.
