I am a Partner and Patent Agent in the Ottawa Office of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP. I draft and prosecute patent applications for inventions in the Life Sciences, and assist my clients in the management of international portfolios. I take particular interest in the unique challenges currently facing inventions involving antibodies, diagnostic technologies, and personalized medicine. I also assist with Plant Breeders' Rights (PBR) applications in Canada, and have my own pending PBR application for a new Passiflora variety that I developed as an amateur breeder.My doctoral research, undertaken at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, culminated in discovery of the gene that is mutated in Shwachman-Diamond syndrome, a rare inherited disorder featuring bone marrow failure, leukemia risk, and pancreatic exocrine insufficiency. I then worked for three years as post-doctoral researcher in the department of Protein and Nucleic Acid Chemistry (PNAC) at the Medical Research Council's Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) in Cambridge (UK), where my research focused on protein engineering.
