I set up the social enterprise Walk East to promote the pleasures and benefits of walking – for health and wellbeing, discovery and community – with East End residents. Recent projects include photo-walk courses for local residents to ‘look afresh’ at their neighbourhood, self-guided walks written for newspapers, magazines, booklets and phone apps, and weekly health walks linked to GP surgeries and community centres. As business director of BEAM Education I was responsible for all commercial aspects of the company's performance, including sales, marketing and finance. BEAM grew to become the UK's leading primary maths publisher – we published books, games and equipment, and provided courses, conferences and in-school support, all designed to help with the teaching and learning of mathematics.I co-led the management buyout of BEAM in 1998, and in 2005 managed the sale of the company to Nelson Thornes, including the integration of customer service, stock and finance systems.
