Roses were the focus of my early work. I've been hybridizing them for around 27 years now, concentrating primarily on the diploid species. My aim is to develop healthy, hardy shrub roses that will flourish in a no spray environment. Strong fragrance, abundant foliage, and good autumn colour are also high on my list of priorities. Roses have so much more to offer than their bloom, and I feel it's time for us to widen our focus and recognize how much the genus Rosa has to offer. While my interest in roses persists, my work has diversified into food plants in recent years. Particularly those suited to permaculture and agroforestry. I've started working with perennial brassicas, crossing biannual cultivars with the perennial cultivar 'Daubenton'. The lines developed from these crosses have been largely perennial, and quite productive. But further work is required to to refine the growth habit. I'm also exploring some less conventional perennial crops with a view to increasing productivity, and researching perennial relatives of some of our annual crops in order to developing perennial forms. Some of these fledgeling breeding projects include developing perennial oats, hardy perennial ground cherries, and hardy perennial beans. I truly believe that perenniality is the key to a more sustainable agricultural system, and that it's time for plant breeders to develop robust perennial crops that are capable of thriving in low input systems.
