I realised my daughter wouldn't be safe and secure, nor live a rewarding and fulfilling life that has dignity, friends, and a purpose, unless I did something about it (https://youtu.be/NtApwkC7gjs). While my daughter was at school, other things that also concerned me was, how would she hold onto a sense of self-worth when the wider world so frequently undervalued her? What would happen when my wife or I was no longer around to support her? Would she lose the life she’s become accustomed to? Would she be sent to live in a place she didn’t want to live? My answer was to ask What’s Possible? What could she do now? What couldn’t she do? What might she be able to do in the future? And what would she possibly never do? From these questions we developed a way to make a life plan with her.We designed this life plan along four main lines: Daily Living, Relationships, Purpose and Financial. Along each line are several stops, each stop represents an challenge that needs to be addressed. For example, Daily Living line stops could include Cooking, Self-care or Travel. For each stop there’s a method to accomplish it. We call this method VOCAL: Vision, Options, Create, Assess, and Legacy. So for each stop we need to have a Vision for how the challenge could be overcome, decide which Options might work, Create a plan, and after a while Assess how well it's working. And once it is working for a stop, this is one small part of our legacy because legacy isn’t just money, legacy is also the values and ways of doing things our children inherit.I’m now proud to say my daughter does more for herself, especially around the house. It seems she goes out with her friends more than I do and is planning to one day leave home. I’ve shared the strategies we used in a book called What’s Possible? It’s full of practical, easy-to-implement ideas to help other families explore what’s possible so their young people can do more for themselves both now and in the future. We all want our children to be safe, secure, and live a rewarding and fulfilling life that has dignity, friends, and a purpose. Maybe we face additional challenges, because our children do face a harder journey than others. But they also deserve to live their best lives too, and not be held back by low expectations.I believe the best way to bring this about is through a life plan, and that has become my mission: to help others to plan a better future with their children so they can achieve their full potential and do what’s possible for them.
