DescriptionApplied Superconductor was a start-up company developing electrical fault current limiting solutions for the energy distribution sector. Turnover increased from £5k - £1.8m in the years from 2008 to 2013. The company developed and purchased some high value intellectual property and successfully demonstrated the capability of the technology.Achievements• Successful equity and loan fundraising from a number of venture capital sources. Over £7m raised over a number of funding rounds.• Negotiation and completion of the acquisition of and Australian R&D company, obtaining intellectual property with development cost of several million pounds.• Grant funding worth in excess of £1.2m awarded and tax credits of over £0.5m received.• Cash flow management and cost cutting in extremely trying circumstances for prolonged period to optimise the opportunity for corporate success and ultimatley to facilitate the sale of the intellectual property to the benefit of investors.Role and Responsibilities• Responsible for the establishment and execution of finance and ancillary functions of this early stage business.• Preparation of statutory financial accounts, all management accounting and reporting, business planning and financial modeling, and corporate fundraising.• Capital project budget management, costing and reporting.• Taxation, VAT, payroll and cash management.• Establishing and delivering IT systems, corporate communications, and workshop/ office facilities management.• Management of grant applications, claims and monitoring.• All relevant statutory corporate secretarial requirements and obligations including shareholder liaison.

Responsible for the monitoring, funding and governance of the Capital Programme (circa £30m pa) before moving to be part of a project team; employed to develop and procure the Metro Reinvigoration Major Project (circa £300m).
