Profile bio

About Graham Monteith

I have always had an interest in finance and my first job after university was as a temp for Deutsche Morgan Grenfell, shortly before the Morgan Grenfell name was discontinued. It was a short-lived experience but it piqued my interest in finance and led me into self-billing projects and SQL programming. However, I have always been endlessly curious about the world we live in and I wanted an opportunity to see the world from a different point of view which resulted in me moving into agriculture. That desire to travel and experience the world and its wonderful diversity has seen me deliver training on diesel engines in Russia, manage teams building equipment in Libya and develop parts sales plans for North Africa and the Middle East, amongst other things.I think we all appreciate that life is confusing, daunting and demanding in equal measure and we make plans to manage these challenges. Mike Tyson famously said "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face" and life jabbed me with a subarachnoid hemorrhage. I count myself very lucky as I passed through the experience unscathed however it did change my path. Once back on my feet, I dedicated time to working to help my brother achieve his business aspirations in the livestock industry where I learnt about the challenges of financing small businesses.I now find myself working in asset finance for John Deere where I have the opportunity to combine my knowledge of agriculture with my interest in finance. I am lucky as I enjoy what I do and it is an interesting time to be in finance as inflation has reappeared when we all thought it was vanquished. For sure, the water looks choppy ahead but I feel confident in both the organisation of John Deere and the team I work in and I believe we will execute our plans and deliver our objectives. Finance is more than a job to me and I spend a great deal of time thinking about the subject. I believe some level of financial literacy is essential for all of us in today's world and I enjoy sharing my thoughts and ideas through my GitHub page, time allowing.Feel free to reach out if you ever want to chat finance or opportunities.

Area Sales Manager

Current

Having completed a course in agricultural finance at the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management I was looking for a position to put my passion for finance and new skills to good use. I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to rejoin John Deere, where I previously had many good experiences, in a rolewhere I could add value.

Jun 2022 - Present

Dealer Network Relationship Manager

Basildon, England, United Kingdom

A role back at the Basildon tractor factory working as part of a team where I represented the voice of the customer within the plant. It is always fascinating to be back in a production environment especially during a time of such upheaval within the supply chain. I learnt a lot and met many accomplished people.

Nov 2021 - Jun 2022

Parts & Amenity Pro Sales Specialist

A brief reunion with the world of parts expanding my knowledge of grass, tillage and amenity products with an enthusiastic team.

Mar 2021 - Nov 2021

Commercial Manager

Bisley Transport

Cheltenham, England, United Kingdom

This has been a period of managing change as I have helped my brother with his business aspirations. I have spent my time digging in the detail of livestock production and transportation. In reality it does not matter if the asset is a sheep or a truck the revenues must exceed the costs. The primary focus of my work has been on the capital allocation and how to ensure we make more good decisions than bad decisions. The basic premise is that it is a lot easier to avoid doing something stupid than it is to do something brilliant. The culmination of this effort is a less capital intensive business, increased confidence in the business direction and improved cash generation. I am in the processing of writing up what I have learnt and it is available on my GitHub page.

Jan 2012 - Mar 2021

Business Analyst

Self-Employed

United Kingdom

Sometimes life gets in the way of your ambitions. I left John Deere International with the intention of acquiring or starting a parts remanufacturing business, however, I had a period of ill health and the project was abandoned. The time was not wasted and I learnt a lot about business models through my research and use of the Strategyzer tools.

Nov 2010 - May 2011

Area Manager Parts & Service Sales

Schaffhausen, Switzerland

A move to a more commercial role but still working on the African continent. I managed the parts and service sales business for the North African, Middle Eastern, West and Central African markets. I looked to continually improve how our dealers, and we as a parts team, did business by creating work instructions for Letters of Credit, standardizing the shipping codes in use and providing inventory training to the dealers, amongst other things. I lead the project to transition the parts business from the Swiss office to the South African office in Johannesburg. A productive, rewarding and enjoyable three years working in a well managed organization with a diverse bunch of colleagues.

Oct 2007 - Oct 2010

Service Manager

Tripoli, Libya

Libya was not then and is not now the easiest place to work. CNH had sold approximately 12 million USD of equipment, primarily to support the Great Man Made River Project. I was asked by CNH International if I would be prepared to go back abroad on a contract to build, test, install, and support the equipment. After a not inconsiderable amount of wrangling we reached acceptable terms. It is not an exaggeration to say that we (CNH at large, other partners, the assembly team, and myself) started with nothing and built a wide range of equipment that, with added water, made the place green.

Mar 2006 - Sep 2007

Reliability Engineer

Basildon, England, United Kingdom

A wide ranging problem solving role. The products did not always perform as the customer or the manufacturer would like and I worked as part of a small team investigating reliability problems where failure mode was inconsistent or no information was available on the failure mode. In our pursuit of solutions I traveled extensively around the dealer network in the UK and Europe, seeking data, providing reassurance, and being a receptacle for pent up frustrations! The result of all the hard work was a better product, happier customers, and a great sense of satisfaction.

Apr 2005 - Mar 2006

Field Service Supervisor

Armavir, Krasnodar, Russia

Resident in Russia as part of a team ensuring that pre-delivery inspections, servicing, and repairs were completed satisfactorily by the dealer. We also strove to share our knowledge, I provided technical training on the relevant tractor hydraulics, transmissions and fuel systems, so that the aftersales experience provided by the dealer improved over time.

Jan 2004 - Nov 2004

Mechanic

Cirencester, England, United Kingdom

I had a desire to get out of the office and away from the computer screen, and returned to working at the job I had before and during my university studies.

Jun 2003 - Dec 2003

Database Programmer

Swindon, England, United Kingdom

I worked with sales personnel and account managers to develop new reports and make sure the existing reports reflect the needs of the business. The reports were written in SQL and Microsoft Access 97.

Mar 2002 - 2003

Credit Controller

Swindon, England, United Kingdom

I dealt with the time consuming and hard to trace queries that arose with the expansion of the company through the acquisition of Bradford & Bingley Relocation. I was given recognition in the quarterly review for my contribution in finding solutions for supplier instructions and invoicing.
