Chief ArchitectCrocodile Clips May 2012 - Apr 2015Responsible for the overall architectural vision of Sumdog.com. I have overseen the migration to a fully Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) with the introduction of asynchronous message buses. I have lead the standardisation of the development environments, using local virtual machines to replicate a production-like environment locally.I have designed and built an automated scaling system that allows our site to respond quickly to spikes in traffic, for example when large numbers of schools come online during the day. The scaling system monitors our EC2 Cloud servers, adding capacity when required and releasing it when not needed. The system allows us to automatically scale-up in under 100 seconds, and helps to manage hosting costs by automatically shutting down during quiet times.I have merged our release and continuous integration systems, so that we are now able to perform production releases multiple time every day.I have pushed for the developers to take an active DevOps role, so that all developers are responsible for their code, for the deployment of their code, and for the ongoing support of the servers running their code.As chief architect I act as line manager to the R&D team and am involved with all hiring and interviewing of developers.

Senior Software EngineerThe Currency Cloud Feb 2012 - May 2012London, England, GbA short-term placement where I helped introduce automated unit, integration and "smoke" testing to the existing development team. This was primarily a remote-working position, and I was able to work effectively from home with occasional visits to the London head office. -
Senior Web DeveloperCrocodile Clips Ltd Aug 2010 - May 2012I worked primarily on Sumdog.com, a maths and English website for schools. I have been responsible for migrating the original prototype Java website to a highly-scalable and fault-tolerant Rails website. I introduced Ruby on Rails as well as the use of caching and database tiers to the architecture.I took responsibility for migrating the hosting of the site from a small dedicated server, to a collection of EC2 cloud servers, allowing the system to grow individual components as visitor numbers grew. The technical changes I introduced have helped Sumdog to accommodate a huge growth in users; traffic to the side doubled month-on-month for the first 18 months of the new hosting. In addition to the new technologies I introduced, I also brought with me a strong passion for using test-driven development using RSpec and Cucumber; modern version control using Git; and a streamlined agile workflow using Pivotal Tracker.I have trained the development team in the use of these technologies and techniques, and am involved with all hiring and interviewing of developers.

It DirectorTeegenius Ltd Nov 2005 - Jun 2008I helped found the UK's first online golf booking website, allowing players to book a game at their local courses. We kept our market-leading position in part due to the technical systems I created, such as linking our website into the software that was already installed in many golf clubs. As the technical director I had full responsibility for the design and successful implementation of our projects. The automation and integration platforms that I designed and developed within TeeGenius were attractive to other companies and in late 2008 we sold the technologies to a golf-holiday business.
