North Sea

Since March 2017 I have been part of an excellent team on board the Stena Spey. Whilst here I have gained invaluable experience working on an older semi-submersible and working with a highly experienced crew whom have continually passed on their knowledge and expertise. Although an older rig than I have previously worked on, the Spey has kept up to date with modern technology and is renowned for its great reputation in the North Sea. I see this as one of the great stepping stones of my career to date on a path to further my career towards completing my second engineers certification and ultimately, in due course, my Chief engineer certification.

Odfjell Drilling's harsh weather environment, DP3 semi submersible has furthered my career as I have gotten to grips with the advanced technology leading the industry at present. Working alongside various technical departments we have remained ahead of schedule for our current drilling contractor, BP. To keep the rig at its peak performance it takes a great amount of knowledge, expertise and teamwork from everyone on board, which is no mean feat considering the rig boasts 4 engine rooms, 8 thrusters and a wide array of technical equipment. During my time on board I was part of the skilled crew maintaining the engine rooms and their associated equipment.

Working with various machinery within and out with the engine room I have learned to deal with the many situations that occur day to day on a DP3 drilling vessel. Communication, problem solving, paperwork and permits are all integral parts of my day to day work. Working for Stena Drilling has been a great opportunity to learn the industry as they are one of the leading companies in deep water drilling. During my time with Stena I have carried out work on 3 of their 4 drill ships, had shipyard experience whilst working on a scheduled SPS in Las Palmas and been involved in several main engine services including 24,000hr and 48,000hr services. Working in extreme conditions, from West Africa to the North Sea I have learned to adapt to the various climates I encounter.

As 4th Engineer on a Cruise ship I had my own 4 hour watch to carry out. As officer of the watch I am in charge of what is going on within the engine room and should be aware of all operations before, during and after handover. With an additional 2 hours of overtime each day planned maintenance was undertaken.
