About Grant Cloyd
I have a passion for learning and enjoy working with new technologies to find sustainable solutions that are tailored to client specifications. My previous background in theater and medical education has prepared me to be a thoughtful, process-oriented collaborator with a desire to create meaningful and engaging user experiences. My love for coding stems from the way in which it melds my creative, theatrical drive with my systematic, organizational approach to medical education. The former enabled me to pursue professional acting for over a decade in and around the Washington, DC area and the latter helped design, create, and foster a 75+ person standardized patient program at a brand new medical school in Fort Worth, Texas. These skills come together to make me an inventive, analytical problem solver who looks to marry an innovative spark with a methodical approach.

Grant Cloyd work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Software Engineer
- Worked autonomously and collaboratively as part of a small, multidisciplinary team on a monolithic Ruby on Rails API/internal user application and supported a B2B front-end web app that enabled users to manage rental listings.- In collaboration with the Director of Product, designed and implemented the back-end logic for a feature which allowed clients to set custom rate discount percentages for their properties based on a renter’s length of stay. This integrated seamlessly with previous rate discount features for greater customization and flexibility of pricing.- Assisted in the design and implementation of a large codebase transition which transformed the rental management product from a single tiered product into a three-tiered system. Each tier had separate product requirements for various aspects including in-house verifications, pricing structures/rates/user pricing autonomy, access and functionality for external integrations (ex. automated AirBnB or ICS syncs), and search/sort positions. Initial product adopters using the most automated tier, “Autopilot”, had a 95% fill rate on their properties within 45 days.Refactored code for rental cost calculations which improved performance, maintainability, testing, and readability.- Built maintenance tasks to fulfill routine requests and data backfills which improved user QoL and data integrity- Utilitized Datadog and user reported issues to fix outstanding bugs and provide a better user experience.- Made small feature contributions to a front-end Typescript/React repo and a Rust GraphQL repo.
Associate Software Engineer
- Developed, maintained, and collaborated on RESTful endpoints, services, models, data, validations, asynchronous jobs, test suites, and documentation for a B2B/B2C Rails API on an agile engineering team overseeing pay rate management.- Provided and responded to PR reviews participated in product/design/architectural discussions and various agile ceremonies to foster team cohesion and help meet product objectives.- Developed the majority of endpoints and backend services to rebuild a user facing data-driven dashboard which improved speed, accuracy, and visibility of data while reducing technical dependencies, external user requests to internal client handlers, and creating improved metrics for performance monitoring. - Developed endpoints and backend services to rebuild a long-term contract agreement feature which improved the feature’s automation by vastly reducing the number of internal user actions required. - Authored spikes for technical and non-technical audiences to research and plan upcoming product feature requirements based on current codebase infrastructure for the dashboard and contract agreement features.- Authored an RFC outlining an approach to improve user feature permissions and encapsulation with guidance from a staff engineer. - Participated in a cross-functional group to remedy challenges within the existing RFC process, increase participation in the review process, reduce wait time for feedback, and solidify criteria for approving and executing proposals.
Support Engineer
• Efficiently triaged, addressed, and documented outcomes and solutions to time-sensitive internal support tickets by writing and executing database queries, migrations, scripts, small PRs, and engaging with data logging applications.• Utilized coding, debugging, test-writing, and general troubleshooting skills to improve rails applications.• Developed and maintained features in ActiveAdmin (a rails front-end framework) including batch actions, searchable filters, CSV generators, rails RESTful views, automated slack notifications via Slack API integrations, and improvements to our internal support ticketing system integrations.• Led or assisted efforts in conjunction with senior engineers, content experts, and internal stakeholders to solve large scale or application-critical issues, ensuring swift resolution and minimal customer impact.• Based on strong performance, I was elevated to the company’s pay rate management engineering team for a three-month apprenticeship wherein assigned duties mirrored the associate software engineering position listed above.
Software Engineering Student
A fifteen week intensive program designed to provide a strong understanding and skillset in React/Redux, Rails, Javascript, Ruby the inter-workings of the internet, and common engineering design practices. In addition to course work, students are challenged to build five single page applications either individually or in pair programming teams.
Associate Director, Standardized Patient Education
- Helped design and implement simulation-based healthcare curriculum for a brand-new medical school - Led the SP program, including overseeing guidelines, screening/training of SPs, and technology resources for the school.- Oversaw the training, management, and implementation of CAE LearningSpace software and hardware for video capture, data gathering, event management, and assessment of students, faculty, and SPs.
Standardized Patient Educator
-Trained actors and non-actors to portray Standardized Patients for medical military education for the School of Medicine, Graduate School of Nursing, Graduate Medical Education and additional outside government organizations such as the Office of Attending Physicians.-Designed, implemented, and executed hundreds of events for hundreds of learners at a time
