This initiative had the backing of government, Department of Education, and other departments. The focus was to assist start up and incubation businesses and address the critical and growing unemployment situation in South Africa. I was approached to further the “Affirmative Action Initiative” for black empowerment, in assisting a newly established black owned Security Company, in it’s marketing drive within the banking, property and construction sectors’.

I was instrumental in creating brand awareness to architects, quantity surveyors, planners and historic monuments councils, for an alternative housing system along with an innovative South African hybrid waterproof and breathable cementitous paint coating “Breathacoat”, and to exploit the opportunity in the low cost mass housing market sector.I was instrumental in the marketing and raising of ‘seed capital finance’ for another South African innovative product, being the “MembraDev” capillary membrane module for water filtration and “Bio Reactor” for air filtration, both of which having been developed by the Polymer Science Institute of Stellenbosch University. My ambition to list this company GMI 2000, on the Venture Capital Market of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange unfortunately did not materialize, due to poor economic factors in the country.

My detailed negotiations with the various banking institutions for mortgage allocations and devising affordability criteria and qualification for the granting of home loans, to the previously disadvantaged communities, created the opportunity for me to develop with three partners an innovative alternative housing system, being the MATLA Polystyrene Foam Core Housing System, and ultimately having the system accepted by the Government, Council Housing Authorities, Community Social Compact Groups and the Banking institutions for mass housing within the defined market sector of community based affordable housing.

In the late 80’s to early 90’s I was involved in the affordable housing market liaising on a daily basis, with the Director of Housing for the Western Cape and the Urban Foundation at Ministerial and Cabinet level for the allocation of housing subsidies to potential first time low income homebuyers. During this time I was the Commercial and Marketing Manager of a company involved in the mass refurbishment of Council Housing to the disadvantaged communities of the Western Cape, where tenants’ of council houses were afforded the opportunity of being granted subsided bonds’ to purchase these houses and upgrade them depending upon Banks’ minimum specification and affordability criteria.
