Profile bio

About Grant Mccarty

I consult with commercial fruit and vegetable growers in Illinois and the Midwest in helping them to develop their business, identify problems, find opportunities, suggest solutions, and advocate for them on their agricultural journey. The passion I have is in long-term consulting that allows me to be there at the start and middle of a business. Trouble-shooting is what I thrive on and aim to provide research based information and guidance to help my growers overcome roadblocks. At the center of my work is program management that tracks and develops communications strategies that address specialty crops educational needs. Public speaking is one of the things I do best with a balance of adult education both in-person and online. As an undergraduate research assistant, I contributed to University of Tennessee’s Organic and Sustainable Crop Production Unit in Knoxville, Tennessee. Variety trials, high tunnels, cover cropping systems, and IPM were all research projects I assisted with under the guidance and mentorship of Dr. Annette Wszelaki. This experience led me to my graduate work in biofumigation methods for bell pepper and tomato production under the direction of Dr. David Butler in the Plant Sciences Department. Following my time at the University of Tennessee, I joined University of Illinois Extension as a Local Foods and Small Farms Educator. My work centers on apple orchards (pruning, management, IPM, best practices), small fruits (brambles, strawberries, blueberries, honeyberry), and vegetables (solanaceous and cucurbits).

Listed skills include Farmer Training, Local Foods Education, Organic Certification, General Vegetable Production, and 4 others.
