Grant A. Bitter, Ph.D. is an independent scientist, naturalist and philosopher polymath based in Southern California. His formal academic training is in Biological Chemistry and Molecular Biology, and his research focus was the regulation of gene transcription in eukaryotes. After three years as a Senior Staff Fellow at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, he transitioned into the then nascent biotechnology industry as a founding scientist of Amgen in 1981. In 1994, after Amgen had grown from fewer than 20 to more than 2,000 staff members, Dr. Bitter established an independent research laboratory (BitTech, Inc.) in Westlake Village, California.During his more than 30 year career in the biotechnology industry, Dr. Bitter’s research programs have explored multiple areas of basic science and technology, including:• development of efficient expression and secretion systems for the production of human proteins• development of recombinant DNA derived subunit vaccines • development of surrogate hosts for analysis of human protein function• cell cycle regulation• DNA repair pathways and regulation• steroid hormone receptor/cofactor function and regulation• functional genomics. Dr. Bitter’s laboratory has developed novel technologies that improve the accuracy and reliability of genetic testing. With the significant advances in DNA sequencing technologies since completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003, and the concomitant generation of information on genomic variation, Dr. Bitter formed Genomic Express, Inc. in 2006. Genomic Express facilitates personalized genomics by bringing the power of modern genomic information and technology directly to individuals, and their healthcare providers, in order that they might be more informed, make better decisions, take control of their own healthcare, and lead a healthier and more productive life. The mission of Genomic Express is to help individuals obtain, understand and maximize the value of their genomic information.
