About Grant Cloud

I'm a firm believer that everyone should find their ikigai in order to have a successful and fulfilling life. Never heard of ikigai? Keep reading. I finally found my ikigai a couple of years ago. But first, a little background...I used to be a magician. And I’m not talking about that short phase that every young boy goes through after receiving a magic kit for Christmas. For ten years magic was the focal point of my life, whether I was practicing, being hired to perform at events, winning competitions, or even auditioning for America’s Got Talent. I loved crafting the story behind an effect in order to make it believable. It wasn’t enough for me to just simply fool someone; I had to make them believe that I was truly achieving the impossible. After graduating high school in Indiana, I became interested in politics and law, and slowly started to move away from performing magic in order to focus on preparing for a professional career.I left Indiana and moved across the country to study business law at the W.P. Carey School of Business and Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University. My original plan was to attend law school and pursue a career as a trial lawyer. That is, until I found my ikigai. We'll get to that soon.Sophomore year of college I had an epiphany. I was doing very well in school, maintaining a 4.0 GPA to ensure I would get into a good law school. But I wasn't really enjoying my studies. Whenever I had free time I found myself outdoors visiting National Parks and hiking, things I've always loved.I thought to myself, "You're going to spend so much of your life working, why not find a job that you will truly enjoy?" I didn't know it at the time, but I was looking for my ikigai. I decided to look into a career as a ranger; it seemed to align with my love for the outdoors. I ended up getting an internship as a park ranger with the Army Corps of Engineers in Missouri the summer of my junior year. I absolutely loved it; after working there I knew it was the career for me. Following college, I was lucky enough to get hired into my current position as a ranger for the Forest Service back in my favorite state - Arizona. It's my ikigai. So at this point you're probably thinking what in the world is ikigai?! It's a Japanese concept that encourages one to center their life around a career that checks 4 boxes - something that you love, something that you're good at, something that the world needs, and something that you can be paid for. Find a job that satisfies those 4 categories and you'll be set. So, what's your ikigai?
