Grantham Ockhuizen (Pr. Sci. Nat) is a seasoned Engineering Geologist with over 15 years of experience in the mining industry. His expertise spans geotechnical engineering, mine design, monitoring programs, and the application of emerging 3D technologies to optimize safety and efficiency in mining operations.Grantham’s passion for 3D technology solutions began during his tenure as Geotechnical Superintendent at Rio Tinto (Rössing Uranium), where he managed large-scale geotechnical drilling programs and performed comprehensive stability analyses. It was here that he saw the transformative potential of 3D technologies and embraced the concept of a digital mine. This passion led to the co-founding of GadgetBoy 3D Solutions, a Namibian-based startup that delivers 3D technology solutions across industries, with a special focus on mining applications. As the Lead Designer and CEO, Grantham specialized in 3D design software such as Fusion 360, NetFabb, and Blender, driving innovative solutions for real-world challenges. In 2017, Grantham founded GeoTechNam, initially a consultancy offering geotechnical advice. Today, GeoTechNam has evolved into a platform for educational workshops, presentations, and talks on emerging geotechnical innovations, helping shape the future of mining across Southern Africa.Grantham’s career spans work on commodities such as Copper, Zinc, Rare Earth Elements, Uranium, and Iron Ore, and he is a strong advocate for continuous learning and technological innovation. His international experience has enhanced his knowledge and refined his approach to establishing state-of-the-art geotechnical practices that improve safety and operational efficiency in mining.Currently, Grantham serves as the Superintendent - Geotechnical at Husab Mine, Swakop Uranium, leading a team in deformation monitoring, slope stability analysis, and system optimization to enhance operational efficiency and safety. He is also pursuing his MSc at the University of the Witwatersrand, with a research focus on integrating advanced technologies for improving geotechnical safety and effectiveness in mining.Beyond his operational roles, Grantham served as the Namibian branch Chairman for the Southern African Institute for Mining & Metallurgy (SAIMM) from 2013 to 2017 and continues as an active member, underscoring his commitment to professional growth and industry leadership. His combined expertise in geotechnical engineering and 3D technologies positions him as a leading voice in both traditional and digital mining innovations.
