Under Dr. Hasan Ayaz, I was conducting research in the field of Neuroergonomics - an emerging field of neuroscience that studies the brain in natural environments and everyday settings. My primary study investigated infants with Autism Spectrum Disorder in social environments and brain-to-brain synchrony between child and parent during interaction using functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS). On our research team, my primary responsibilities included acquisition of neuroimaging data during on-site visits, coordination with children's parents for both virtual and in-person visits, and community outreach for recruitment of new participants. I also assisted with neurological data analysis and organization and communication between team members.

I was responsible for locating and obtaining a patient's medical history, documenting dictated notes during a patient visit on the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), facilitating diagnostic tests, all while providing unparalleled customer service to patients. To assist providers, it was my task to perform various point of care tests, such as rapid flu, rapid strep test, urinalysis, and EKGs, to aid the doctor in providing fast and caring medical attention. I was also trained in phlebotomy and blood safety. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I was responsible for screening patients for the virus, testing with a PCR swab, and giving adequate care instructions.

I lived in Lisbon, Portugal for a remote internship for Vemgoo. Our project was to create an app where the user can search a sport and time of year, and the program returns a heat map showing where conditions are best. My role was mainly focused on back-end development and required me to gather and organize data for the app. I utilized my knowledge of pandas software as well as good data collection techniques for commercial use.

I worked under Dr. Lucina Uddin in the Brain Connectivity & Cognition Laboratory (BCCL), where we investigated brain connectivity and cognition in typical and atypical development. In the lab, we studied children with Autism using a functional MRI, measuring functional connectivity as well as analyzing structural connectivity. Our research aims to examine the large-scale brain network organization that supports high-level cognitive processes. In the lab, I assisted with quality control, data entry, and database maintenance.

In Dr. Peter Larsson’s lab, we studied the molecular mechanisms that open and close voltage-gated channels in cells. Our studies aimed to have an understanding of these channels that can be utilized in treatments for disorders such as epilepsy, heart arrhythmias, and paralyses. I assisted with two projects in the lab. The first used a voltage clamp in fog oocytes to measure current through voltage-gated potassium channels (KCNQ1). Here I learned the fundamentals of genetic manipulation and membrane biophysics. The other project I assisted with used heart cells that expressed a fluorescent protein to measure changes in membrane potential.

Was mentored by the Neurosurgery team at JSUMC. During the mentorship, I was guided through patient rounds, neurosurgery, and medical record procedures. I worked with the PAs for routine check-ups with patients, including visits to the ICU and PICU, oncology, radiology, surgicenter, and regular nursing floors. I was shown the basics of CT scan and MRI analysis. I shadowed many brain and spinal surgeries and was shown neuro-specific techniques.
