How many people in Africa speak English or French or another European language as their first language? It may surprise you to learn that only 0.5% of Africans speak English as their mother tongue which pales in comparison to the many other African languages that people speak. At iAfrika Digital we’re working to make the web more African. This means creating cultural and educational platforms for African language speakers. Each year they welcome over 1.8 million visitors who access our resources over 5.8 million times. Developing these platforms has required research, development and co-design with our users including: - PhD research on language, history and culture and the web in Africa - Over 23,000 surveys with African language speakers to understand their needs and to deliver products that are fit for market.Do you want to engage African language speakers in their mother tongue languages? We’re expanding to different African languages and regions and looking for partners to do this. Let’s chat about how we might collaborate.

Phd StudentUniversity Of Cape Town May 2009 - Aug 2013Cape Town Area, South AfricaI completed a doctoral thesis on how the past in various forms is mobilised in contemporary KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa in attempts to attain status and to gain access to resources like state funding and land, and how this intersected with present-day identity politics in the province. Part of this entailed a critical analysis of a governmental initiative that uses new digital technologies to facilitate the recording and sharing of local history and culture.More detail here: http://www.mcnulty.co.za/2014/04/07/custodianship-on-the-periphery-archives-power-and-identity-politics-in-post-apartheid-umbumbulu-kwazulu-natal/ -
