Since my promotion to Principal Consultant I have continued to manage and support the successful delivery of UK-based and international waste strategy projects. In 2012, I had the unique opportunity to work with the St. Helena Government (SHG) to develop a solid waste management strategy for the remote UK Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic. This involved living on the Island for approximately 3 months in the role of ‘waste expert’, liaising with all levels of SHG and co-ordinating the work of the multi-disciplinary project delivery team in the UK.

During my time as an Associate, I transferred from the Permitting team into the Waste Strategy and Procurement team, in response to the opportunities available in the rapidly emerging waste collection and treatment sectors. From 2007, I managed and provided technical support on waste strategy development and services procurement projects for a number of local authorities and private sector clients in the UK. I also provided technical support on international Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects arising from landfilling and waste treatment activities in several African nations.

My first role within SLR was to manage and support the delivery of numerous landfill re-permitting projects under the PPC regime. Clients included most of the major UK waste management operators and industrial firms with in-house disposal facilities. Successful delivery of several key multi-disciplinary projects in the £50k-£120k range resulted in my promotion to Associate in November 2006.

I joined TRL, with whom I worked through my role at Stanger, to expand my environmental knowledge and skills base. The role involved monitoring and maintaining Tarmac’s portfolio of closed landfill sites across the UK. I subsequently completed a WAMITAB COTC (Level 4) in Landfill Management and went on to manage an operational site in the Midlands region. The diversity of environmental issues that I encountered encouraged me to move into a consultancy role.

Initially employed as a Laboratory Technician, I worked my way up to the roles of Quality Controller and Client Liaison Manager, responsible for ensuring that projects were completed on time and on the rare occasions that they were not, working with staff and the client to deliver a mutually acceptable outcome.
