Azane Tx aims to commercialize our lipid nanoparticles and mRNA delivery research and is co-founded by members of the OFK lab at the University of Toronto. Biomedical Product Development (BME 1800) teaches students the fundamental theories of product development beginning with ideation all the way to commercial release. As a TA, I help student groups define their products, build out their documentation, and assess their progress.

The Hof Lab at the University of Victoria focuses on supramolecular medicinal chemistry. My project was to develop a supramolecular scaffold that could capture specific small molecules which signal a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Over the course of this project I worked through the synthesis of a calix[4]arene scaffold and showed a proof of concept for its functionalization with peptides. Through this process, I learned how to manage long term projects and troubleshoot issues in the lab.

adMare (formerly The Centre for Drug Research and Development) is a pillar of the Canadian R&D infrastructure with scientific and commercial expertise, specialized R&D infrastructure and seed capital to build strong life sciences companies.As a co-op student in the formulations department I worked on new formulations of a drug product to improve delivery in the body while maintaining physical and chemical stability. This project was my first introduction to the life sciences industry in Canada and an excellent opportunity to grow as a scientist with the support of many new mentors.

Eco-Care Technologies is a small R&D lab that works to develop environmentally friendly pesticides and herbicides for home and garden use. I worked on the formulation of new products by testing physical and chemical stability of stored samples. Additionally, I prepared formulations for our biology lab to test in the field for efficacy.

Neil Burford's research group at the University of Victoria focuses on Main Group Chemistry. Minimal research has been done in the area before, so there is still much fundamental knowledge to fill in. I worked in the research group as part of a volunteer research term at UVic. I synthesized samples using air-sensitive chemicals in an inert-atmosphere glovebox. My main goal was to fill in basic knowledge of the chemistry of main group elements - how they react, how stable are their products, and to characterize their NMR, IR, and x-ray crystallography profiles. It was here that I had my first experience outside of university teaching labs, and I gained appreciation for collaborating with other scientists and managing long term projects.
