Learning will focus on how family/couples therapy addresses diversity issues (e.g., ethnicity, integration, and blended families), clinical mental health and developmental needs, trauma and abuse during the students future clinical work with both families and couples.PSY6060: Human SexualityThis course is a study of human sexuality and intimacy. Other areas of emphasis include gender issues, sexual disorders, sexual orientation, and sexual abuse. This course analyzes the dynamic processes of love, intimacy and sexuality in couple and family relationships from spiritual and systems perspectives. Special focus is given to human sexuality including strategies for enhancing the sexual experience, as well as diagnosing and treating sexual dysfunctions within the context of marital and family therapy.

The Center for Enriching Relationships (CER) exists to actively enrich and support relational and family healing within the church and community for the underserved (low-income). I counsel individuals and couples to promote healthy and life-giving mental health and relationships. At CER, I am currently under the supervision of Dr. Donald Welch, Ph.D., Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (CA: #50129), and Dr. Claudia Grauf-Grounds, Ph.D., Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (CA: #17348). I enjoy providing counseling that is both theologically rich and clinically significant.

Between May 2020 to December 2020, I was a volunteer Associate Counselor at The Elizabeth Hospice (TEH) in Mission Valley, San Diego. I was under the supervision of Elizabeth Hospice’s Professional Clinical Counselor Supervisor: Yvonne Rothermel, M.A., Licensed Clinical Social Worker (CA: #20259). I worked with a Surviving Spouse Loss support group and individual grief counseling for minors and adults with various types of losses: parent, partner, sibling. While at TEH, I completed a specialized 40-hour Grief Counseling Training and was trained and supervised in Sand Tray Therapy for kids, adolescents, and adults. I took this position in an effort to meet BBS requirements for my LPCC application to meet the requirements: 150 hospital hours and towards the 500 child/family/couple hours prior to the removal of this credentialing requirement by the CA BBS.

At Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) I provide short-term, strengths-based and solution-focused therapy interventions for undergraduate students on PLNU's campus. I am under the supervision of PLNU's Senior Clinician. In counseling sessions, I am able to utilize campus resources and rhythms of growth and rest that are built into PLNU's milieu (ex: chapel, peer groups that classes utilize for spiritual and personal growth, as well as an onsite Medical Doctor, Psychiatrist, Nurse, Registered Dietitian, Academic Counselors/Coaches, Athletic Coaching Staff, and Professors).

I was able to observe and interact pediatric patients in an individual and group setting as they received treatment for their presenting mental health and social ailment problem(s). I worked on an interdisciplinary treatment team of Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social Workers, Nurses and out-patient services like counselors and Department of Child Safety workers during the child’s treatment. I regularly lead and supported therapeutic groups that attend to the needs of the milieu and the individual's treatment plan leading up to discharge. I also followed a strict documentation process to record and protect patient health information on PCH's proprietary documentation systems as well as accurately reporting acute changes in behavior, affect and development to the treatment team. One project that I worked on was to create opportunities for the individual treatment plan’s goals to be integrated into the group milieu by increasing staff awareness and continuity of care efforts to streamline the details of the child’s treatment aside from stabilization.

At Scottsdale Bible Church, I served in their Counseling Ministry as a Master's Level Counseling intern, under clinical supervision of Dr. David Walther, M.Div., Ph.D.I saw adult clients and use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for depression and anxiety. With couples, I used the Gottman Method Couples Therapy model and completed Gottman Method Couples Therapy level 1 and 2 clinical trainings as an intern. The counseling that I provided is within a community mental health model and is short-term (generally 10 sessions max), and completely free to the client. The counseling ministry is run as an outpatient practice; I conduct intake interviews, scheduling, and discharges upon completion of the treatment plan and supervisor approval. I had weekly individual supervision appointments which shaped my case conceptualization and treatment planning. I worked as a Program Assistant for Boosterthon Enterprises between 2013 and 2017 (Booster). Booster is a school-based fundraiser that emphasizes fitness, character, and leadership through a 10-day program that was on the school’s campus each day and would crescendo in a fun run or color run for every student on campus that day. My role as a Program Assistant allowed me to focus on individualized program success, remarkable experiences for the schools we served, and local organization structuring. Here I became experienced and proficient in multiple proprietary systems including SalesForce, Brain Tree, and other company-specific programs. I also managed multiple online accounts simultaneously through these information systems while being accountable for collecting upwards of $1,000,000 of gross revenue each school year. While working for Boosterthon Phoenix, I spent time as the local Warehouse Manager and local Collections Specialist.
