Engineering Manager
CurrentIt has been a great job with great clients, all of whom have been on different journeys. We have completed feasibility studies into major waste-to-energy projects, designed & overseen the construction of a family of hulking salt harvesters, got our hands dirty in cement aluminium engines auto-window glass wheat herbicides salt.....on the list goes. We helped Calix get off the ground with their pilot vertical calcination facility that lead to working on the next generation 5 tph plant. And our friends at the Australian Astronomical Observatory who commissioned us to design and supply a new "Shutter Emergency Brake" - we got to see the Warrumbungles and some stars! Followed by our supply to ANSTO of their Back Scattering Small Angle Spectometer - running under a vacuum so close to absolute zero a black hole would have trouble striking a light, with neutron beams safely enclosed inside 30T of SS and lead to our design. Which has naturally lead to the design and project management of the construction of Accensi's greenfield herbicide and pesticide facility near Geelong. An eclectic list of clients, people and projects who have sustained the business for over a decade. And my role - keep clients happy, employ young smart people to produce excellent engineering, add some wisdom (hopefully!) and make some money for all concerned......
Managing Partner
From 317 acres of bare earth and bush - grew 6,500 olive trees....and ultimately extra virgin olive oil, table olives and a plethora of branded olive products. A hands on business from surveying, installation of irrigation systems and fencing, planting and sustaining olive trees, harvesting, producing olive oil, designing a brand, procurement of labels and packaging, sales and marketting. The highlights - many quality awards in gold, silver & bronze, living off our own amazing olive oil for 15 years, bringing 2 children up in a mix of country and city, winning the Australian Olive Associations National EV Olive Oil Show (Best of Show) in 2007, surviving drought and bush fire and ultimately moving on. What an adventure!
National Engineering & Maintenance Manager / National Maintenance Manager (Various Roles)
An organisation growing, morphing, always in transition. Assets spread across Australia emanating from the growth of grain production and flour milling. A strong background staffed by country folk with roots into the community, having to accept corporatisation and the growth of national brands. So engineering and maintenance management was at times an imposition into a culture of independence, so much negotiation and compromise required to make 2 steps forward. Much change - rationalisation of joined businesses so my role was as much strategic evaluation of one set of assets over another, one set of business practices over another. The guiding principle to take advantage of the cumulative strengths of the business.
Site Engineer
A formative role - a major and now hazardous chemical site. 25 trades and supervisors on direct report. 24 x 7 operations. A series of aggressive, corrosive, abrasive and hazardous chemical processing operations on one site - phosphorous, phosphoric acid, STPP, baking powder. A range of technologies. A range of people. Never enough time or money but our job was to keep the wheels turning and the ship afloat. It took a lot of innovation, a lot of long nights, a lot of good fellas....in the end defeated slowly but surely but the rising AUD and loss of tariff protection. But we tried!
Site Engineer
A fascinating start-up using an aerobic bacteria fermentation process to produce citric acid. All good and many dedicated staff but Aerobic bugs are very sensitive to loss of oxygen, the reliability of which is dependent on high quality engineering, which start-ups just cant afford. Everyone tried and we had lots of wins but in the end the accumulated losses and lack of sufficient investment strangled growth. A world of aseptic SS welding, compressors and back up generators, crystallisers, various filtration technologies and effluent discharge monitoring.........
