I have spent my career following my desire to creatively blend structural design and architecture. Design is a funny term, actually. On one hand it makes the mind go to creation and on the other to problem solving.I have always known that most structural engineering firms do engineering design in a black box with little regard given to the architecture. This results in structural systems that solve the problem, but often not creatively. These solutions are done exclusive of the valuable integration into and with the architecture. How about trying a different approach? Why not do the design process in an iterative and collaborative mode? Does this really have to be a shocking concept?My goal - structural design for the few. We have done for the many, not much fun, but it sure paid the bills very well.
