At SoftIron, I led the software division that was responsible for developing the software stack for SoftIron's two key products: "HyperCloud" and "VM Squared".HyperCloud is a full-system solution (hardware and software) designed to deliver "on-prem" cloud computing services. The value proposition is a customer can control cloud computing costs (via deterministic CapEx rather than open-loop OpEx found on public cloud platforms) while still enjoying the ease of use model pioneered by the public cloud platforms. The software division was responsible for delivering a front-end user interface as well as the services needed to support cloud computing (e.g., snapshotting, reliable data storage, switch configuration, a modern application programming interface, a terraform provider, etc.)VM Squared is a VMware alternative.The software division supported this product by utilizing a subset of the HyperCloud source code coupled with developing new software components to support a scalable virtual machine hosting service.

At Teradata, I was a member of Teradata's Technical and Innovation Office Research Team where the charter was to perform advanced development to provide technology enablers to support Teradata's strategic mission.Projects that I defined and led are:- Installation and configuration of the Teradata database on general-purpose bare-metal hardwareDeveloped a fully automated system using Stacki to build a cluster of general-purpose x86 systems from ground zero (i.e., powered off) to database "dial-tone". This encompassed installing the entire operating system, configuring all the networks (data, compute and management) and configuring a globally accessible storage subsystem (using Dell EMC's VxFlex software stack).- Investigate the Arm server processor marketThis project involved examining the rapidly changing Arm server processor space to determine if Arm processors will, for the first time, make a significant play into the data center server market that has been dominated by x86 processors for over 30 years.- Porting Stacki to install and configure a Raspberry Pi clusterThe purpose of this project is three-fold: 1) Get a better understanding of the components in the IoT space, 2) get a better understanding of the scope for porting an x86 software stack to an Arm-based software stack, and 3) create a software platform for edge-computing prototypes.

I was the co-founder and Vice President of Engineering at StackIQ. StackIQ produced "Stacki" an open-source solution that is capable of bringing thousands of servers, from fully-configured "heavy" servers to Raspberry Pis, up to a ping and a prompt in minutes. Participated in the negotiations to successfully navigate the acquisition of StackIQ by Teradata.

I co-founded the Rocks Cluster Group at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) where I helped architect, design and implement the Rocks Cluster Distribution, an open-source software stack that enables domain-specific users to build and manage their own high-performance computing clusters. To promote the Rocks community, I co-organized a series of user-focussed conferences named “Rocks-a-Palooza”. These events were held at La Jolla, AMD World Headquarters in Sunnyvale, and in Singapore.

I was a staff research programmer for the High Performance Virtual Machine group at UCSD where I helped design and implement a lock-free shared memory transport for MPI written in C. Coupled with the MPI code, I also helped write custom firmware that ran on the co-processor for Myrinet network cards that efficiently transferred packets between the network and the MPI layer.
