I provided data management and statistical analysis to support merger and antitrust investigations. The projects I worked on spanned the following industries: online advertising, online real estate, wholesale and retail gasoline, industrial piping, cement, hospitals, pharmacies, and medical services providers. My work required managing large datasets (up to tens of millions of rows) which often contained sensitive personally-identifiable information. The projects I worked on also required me to conduct statistical analyses, both independently and in tandem with staff economists. In addition to providing data summary and visualization for use by staff economists and lawyers, I used the following techniques most often: - exploratory analysis using linear and logistic regression- event analysis using difference-in-differences and instrumental variables- merger simulations using estimated demand systems- modeling supply/demand systems using instrumental variables- modeling demand systems using logit, probit, and mixed logit frameworksI also worked on projects that were not specific to any particular merger or antitrust case, but were aimed at setting up infrastructure that would help process cases more quickly. For example, I worked on a project to use Python natural language processing and document ranking algorithms to help identify important documents from large document submissions by companies.
