The Chief Data Officer is responsible for the vision, policy and practices to make data an asset for daily use throughout the organization. Work with Data Officers throughout the Bureaus and Offices. During my time as CDO, the FCC successfully launched it's first data APIs and a variety of new open data applications including the first National Broadband Map; crowdsourced measurements of actual wireline and wireless broadband speeds; developer days; an internal Enterprise Information Catalog; a clearinghouse to track the accessibility features of mobile phones; and the first centralized, online database of 2,000 television stations "public inspection files" including the stations real-time political ad disclosures.

United Cerebral Palsy is a respected, 60 year-old organization of more than 100 local affiliates working to improve the lives of people with disabilities. UCP believes the next 5 to 10 years will look very different than the past 60 years, however, as the Internet continues to erase barriers that previously effected many persons experiencing long term disabilities. UCP is expecting far more tech-powered, user-driven future along with major social changes from an aging population demographics. I've joined UCP to help them transition to a more Internet-savvy future. We have high hopes for the opportunities of the 21st century including mobile and open source hardware, and business market that better sees people with disabilities as just another community of "extreme users" who drive innovation.

The Sunlight Foundation is dedicated to using the Internet as a catalyst for greater government openness and transparency. I joined the Sunlight Foundation in 2006 and started up the successful Sunlight Labs, the technology arm of the organization. With the Labs, Sunlight created a culture of prototyping, innovation, and bringing together top technologists with experts on government to get a virtuous cycle of innovation going in the open government space.

Fotonotes developed the opens source image annotation technology whose meme has been widely adopted by photo sharing websites including Flickr. Fotonotes demonstrated a simple way of leaving notes on photos via the browser and storing those notes in a database of in the image file itself. The simplicity and wiki-style read/write nature of notes by anyone was innovative compared to other approaches.
