Berkeley Research Group is a leading global strategic advisory and expert consulting firm that provides independent advice, expert testimony, investigations, and regulatory and dispute consulting to Fortune 500 corporations, financial institutions, government agencies, major law firms, and regulatory bodies around the world. I am part of the BRG's Energy and Natural Resources Practice. In this capacity, I advise utilities, oil and gas companies, and energy consumers on risk management and strategy development. I develop financial models used in evaluating investment opportunities, M&A, operations, and other areas. I have been active in the renewable energy industry helping develop business plans for renewable energy ventures and conducting financial analyses on individual and portfolios of renewable energy projects including biomass, hydro, and wind.

At the core of every organization is a value chain, whereby resources are acquired, processed and transformed into products and services. In managing this chain, there are big decisions and big risks concerning supply, operations, and marketing. There are risks involving markets, technologies, politics, society, and “acts of god.” Most risk management, focuses not on value-chain risk, but on supporting activities in finance and business processes. Finance and business process risks are important, but value-chain risks are equally important. Value-chain risks are different than finance and business process risks. They cannot typically be quantified using historical data, but instead require considerable expert judgment. They are best managed with a mix of financial instruments, “real” investments, and strategic changes. We have the experience and a set of tools in probability, economics, and finance to manage value-chain risks.
