Initially employed as the Fleet Manager and then as the Service Manager for Northpower Ltd, based in Auckland, New Zealand, I managed the fleet of some 500 vehicles in Auckland and Waiheke Island. The Northpower fleet comprised some 500 vehicles and plant and included a wide range of vehicles including EPV’s, truck mounted cranes, UTE’s and cars. Responsibilities included condition monitoring of the fleet to determine replacements, the design of vehicle fitments and liaison with Procurement for the purchase of new vehicles where necessary, accident investigation and prevention through training as well as maintenance and repair of the fleet. Northpower’s fleet comprised both owned and leased vehicles. To manage the fleet we utilised a number of vehicle computer programmes including the Custom Fleet Vehicle Management system for the leased vehicles. I wrote and delivered vehicle management and use training material for the national fleet. A promotion to manage the internal workshop placed me in charge of three full time mechanics. We utilised specialist external workshops from time to time to supplement the internal facilities. These included a panel beater and a heavy vehicle repair agent. I was also responsible for maintaining standards of the electrical testing and safety gear in use by the operational staff at Northpower and established a system to ensure that all gear in use was tested.

I facilitated Accounting, Financial Management, Operations Management and Supervisory Development for the Business Studies Unit in Durban and Richards Bay. I was the Coordinating Facilitator for the BSU and as such I set the assignments and the exams. I was selected by a panel from National Treasury to be a SCOA Facilitator in 2004.

I was employed as the Transport Officer for the Durban Metro Electricity Department. The Durban Metro Electricity Department operates some 800 vehicles and plant which included truck mounted cranes, EPV’s, heavy truck and light vehicles and sedans. Duties included the design, procurement, maintenance and repair of the fleet as well as accident management. Eventual disposal of the fleet was also my responsibility. The Fleet was located at some 12 different locations throughout Durban, South Africa and liaison with Management and staff at all levels was a major role of the position. I dealt with the users of the fleet as well as the Management within Electricity. The Electricity Department purchases power from Eskom, the national power generator and reticulates it throughout the greater Durban area. Some 1 400 square kilometres of all types of terrain including off road and wide tar. While with the Department, I introduced a number of innovations including on board computerised vehicle monitoring and de mountable bodies for the fleet.
I completed the three year Diploma in Road Transport, studying part time with the Rand Afrikaans University of South Africa. The Diploma.
I studied part time at Varsity College to qualify. I was awarded first place and the South African Council Prize for Financial Management..
