Comms & Engagement Lead

Leading the strategy and implementation behind community and iwi engagement for FNSF, including media relations and stakeholder management. In a fast-paced and highly regulated development environment, rolling out new renewable energy infrastructure projects into communities with no familiarity or experience of them is a challenging comms prospect. While there's generally universal acknowledgement we need to collectively embrace a cleaner, greener way of life - including how we generate electricity - when it comes to accepting the reality of the infrastructure needed to get the job done to help NZ's renewable energy transition, some don't want to change the status quo. As a comms professional this presents a unique challenge - how does the common good narrative of renewable energy prevail and how do renewable developments earn their social license to operate?

Communications Manager

Whangarei, Northland, New Zealand

Leading a team of five across the external and internal comms requirements for NRC and working closely within the larger Community Engagement team at Council. Focused on elevating visibility and recognition for the work Council does within the Noerthland community, particularly in partnership with Māori. Leading role in developing and rolling out comms strategies in response to complex National Policy Statements as directed by central government.

Business Owner

Digital Ninja was a boutique agency that specialised in communications and content creation. We worked with clients to create strategies that looked to leverage content into the PR space, rather than just setting it loose on social and hoping for impact. At the heart of everything at we did at Digital Ninja was an ability to recognise story and the value in that to brands by ensuring others engaged with that story too. A long-term client was the Hundertwassser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery in Whāngarei with whom we worked for several years from conception through to opening, delivering consistent high-value media coverage and PR results throughout this time.

2008 - Dec 2021

Snr Account Manager

PR's a game where having a working knowledge of journalism has helped a lot. I know what a story is, I know why a journo should be interested and I know how to pitch so they swing hard at it. It also helps knowing most of the people still in the news game too I guess.

2011 - 2013 ~2 yrs

Executive Producer

Senior role producing first Sports Tonight and then Nightline. Responsible for editorial direction of the shows, edited all journalist copy, wrote all presenter voiceover and ran on-air presentation with director and crew.Took Nightline through the Christchurch quake, Pike River and the Japanese Tsunami. One of the best professional experiences of my life. Good talented people that work hard and play hard.

2008 - 2011 ~3 yrs

Freelance Director/Producer

Tv Production

Travelled the world making TV shows. What could be better for a man without family?Primarily worked as a director where my journalistic interviewing and story-telling skills held me in good stead.Hi-lights probably making a show called 'Ocean Zoo' out of Australia, 'Hope in Hell' with the International Committee of the Red Cross - Africa, Asia, Europe, America, and a big reality show called 'Castaway' for the BBC.

2003 - 2008 ~5 yrs

One News - Reporter

Came straight out of Uni and into this role. Great people and a great job that taught me writing, strong communication and people skills, interviewing skills, nailing deadlines and a general ability to quickly get my head around complex topics. A journalist is seldom a master of anything but the good ones are smart, agile and confident. I loved my time on camera with TVNZ - it set me up to get to where I am now.
