I was always going to be an engineer. For as long as I can remember any object with a cover was not safe from disassembly, inspection, and in most cases, successful reassembly. My curiosity turned me into a scientist, but in seeking new challenges I learned new skills to tackle some of the hardest problems. My contributions as a scientist and manager have positioned the US to excel in global technological competition and to reduce risks from catastrophic events. As a scientist, I teamed to build a world leading program in plasma physics. As a manager, I guided major corporate investments in new technologies and capabilities. As a government leader, I set directions and developed new programs to inform policy and address the challenges of global competition. While not all our investments have yet to mature, enough will to make a difference.
