Greg Johnstone is the president and senior consultant with PharmaTox Inc. and Integrated Safety Services, a Nova Scotia Company, providing services across Canada. With over 45 years of applying his knowledge of pharmacology, toxicology, substance abuse/addiction and occupational health and safety, Greg has developed a multidisciplinary perspective on how drugs and chemicals impact the body. Greg has applied his knowledge to resolve challenging cause and affect relationships between drugs/chemicals, clinical use, abuse, addiction, workplace exposure and outcomes associated with their use. Greg is an experienced and respected educator, known for his ability to translate complex scientific information into understandable insights for non science audiences. Greg has been accepted as an expert witness over 300 times throughout Canada, in a variety of legal contexts (criminal, civil-personal injury, child protection, and labour arbitrations, etc.), in relation to the effects of drugs and chemicals on the body, including drug induced impairment, toxicity, drug interactions, addiction, withdrawal management, drug testing and related challenges. The growing use of Cannabis for recreational and medical purposes has created a huge void in the understanding of its effects on the body and related risk factors, in the context of health, highway and workplace safety. Greg has a sound understanding of such relationships and has prepared technical reports for clients, to address risks (acute and chronic) associated with the use of cannabis, including educational/instructional programs addressing the impact of Cannabis use on health and safety. He has been an invited guest speaker on such considerations and has given expert testimony recently in a number of legal contexts involving Cannabis, its’ active constituents and their impact on functional capacity (impairment), interpretation of drug test results and the management of associated health and safety risks.
