I specialize in: 1) facilitating the growth of my students as readers, writers and leaders, motivating them to affect change in themselves, their academic abilities, their communities and the world; 2) collaborating to lead schools and programs toward envisioning and designing better ways to accomplish this for our students.As an Educator-in-Residence at Linda Darling Hammond's School Redesign Network at Stanford University, I worked in collaboration with the Hillsdale High School faculty to redesign the school into smaller learning communities that better help all students succeed in their transition to high school. Now, at San Mateo Middle College, I am working to create a high school experience that better leads all students to transition successfully beyond high school into college and careers. With the Hillsdale-Middle College Effect, I work in collaboration with teachers, Rotary International, and the non-profit NamasteDirect to educate high school students about poverty and microfinance through local and global learning experiences, cultivating young leaders who are motivated and empowered to create a better world. Since 2009, The Hillsdale/Middle College Effect has raised over $200,000 to provide business education and microloans to women in Guatemala to help them start and build small businesses. We have led over 100 students on study tours to Guatemala to learn first-hand how this work is done.
