Middle College Of San Mateo

Middle College offers motivated students the unique opportunity to finish their high school education in a highly personalized college environment, creating a bridge to post-secondary education with both educational and economic benefits. As one of the teacher leaders of Middle College, I strive to build a program in collaboration with our district's high schools and the College of San Mateo that helps students experience college success while they are still in high school. I create curriculum connected to "real world" experiences through community service and internships so that students are engaged in the world for which we aim to prepare them. Students with the potential to be the first in their family to attend college, among others, especially benefit from this program. I provide counseling and guidance as students begin to explore post-secondary education, working with community college administrators and faculty to make sure students are supported and successful.

The Hillsdale Effect seeks to change the lives of women in Guatemala through microfinance and business training in cooperation with Namaste-Direct while also changing the lives of youth in our community by empowering them to be citizens of a global community who can make their world a better place.

I coordinated the creation of smaller learning communities in collaboration with administration, faculty and the School Redesign Network at Stanford University; wrote Federal Smaller Learning Community grants; served as Kyoto and Cusco House Leader and created The Hillsdale Effect, while teaching English, AVID, Japanese Language and Culture and ELD to high school students of all ages and abilities.

Recruited Japanese and Taiwanese university students to particpate in service learning and cross-cultural programs at Stanford University and throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
