About Greg Leach

My experience spans over 35 years in many facets of wildlife conservation and this experience has been gained mostly in the tropics of northern Australia but includes extensive experience in Papua New Guinea and experience in Indonesia. I have a particular interest in plant species that are threatened by activities such as habitat destruction, development or trade. Specialist interests include mangroves and freshwater plants with an emphasis on taxonomy, productivity and changes following disturbance. The traditional use of plants has also been a research activity. Teaching, training and mentoring of staff have been important components of my employment in both the public sector and academic institutions. Since 1997 my experience has included international conservation activities, in particular with my involvement in the UN Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES), primarily through my membership on the CITES Plants Committee. From 1998 to 2011 I was at an executive management level in the area of natural resource and wildlife conservation within the Northern Territory government. During this time I have managed the Darwin Botanic Gardens, the NT Herbarium and the Northern Territory government natural resource scientists.Specialties: botanical survey, plant taxonomy and ecology of tropical flora, threatened species management and sustainable wildlife use.
