As the Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy, I was responsible for promoting New Zealand's trade and political interests with the Egyptian and Libyan governments I provided analysis of the political environment for the New Zealand Government utilizing Arabic language skills and local interlocutors. I produced extensive work on human rights issues. I also advocated for New Zealand companies seeking greater trade access into North Africa, through the facilitation of Ministerial and trade missions to the region. Successfully negotiated New Zealand's first bilateral trade treaty with Libya. Kept NZ Government appraised of developments during the Arab Spring including identifying areas of opportunity for closer bilateral cooperation post-Revolution. Worked with the Arab League on issues pertaining to the Arab/ Israeli peace process. Significant consular assistance to New Zealand citizens during Egyptian and Libyan evacuations.

As the political officer at the Embassy, I was charged with engaging and lobbying the Saudi Government and other Gulf states on regulatory and political issues concerning New Zealand, including companies/exporters. Researched and analyzed the political and security environment for the New Zealand Government through the use of my Arabic language skills and gathering information from a variety of sources. Advocated for a change in Saudi government policy on matters ranging from human rights to regulatory issues. Lobbied for greater human rights awareness amongst Saudi security and judicial agencies. Kept NZ Government appraised of opportunities and how NZ could develop education linkages with the Gulf. Consular assistance to New Zealand citizens as required. Planned and facilitated visits by NZ trade representatives to the region
