In an era when one can become world-famous just for being rich and annoying, corporate ruthlessness is deified, competence in the workplace takes a back-seat to the ability to CYA, and the most beloved athletes turn out to be closet sex addicts or performance drug users, that idea of building character seems quaint.In this book, author Greg McCann points out that not only are character and integrity not outmoded, but it's in your best interests to make sure your self-perception and reputation are aligned--and to make sure you are what we once called a person of good character.Even better, McCann points out that we're not stuck with the character we now exhibit. Just as we can exercise and build a healthier body, we can actually build a stronger character, and he provides a detailed action plan to help us carry this out.This is a short book, but it's filled with good information and solid advice, and not a word is wasted. In my field of family business/enterprise I have won two awards - The 2006 Family Firm Institute’s Lifetime Achievement in Family Business Education and the 2016 Family Firm Institute Interdisciplinary Award. As a teacher: I am proud to have helped develop three minors: Women & Gender Studies, Business Law, and Family Business. I also feel extremely proud to have led the effort to create the nation’s first undergraduate major in family business/enterprise. I have taught a broad range of courses and have had consistently high evaluations. As a campus leader: From its inception in 1998 until stepping down in 2014, I was, for most of that time, director of the Family Enterprise Center overseeing the Board of Advisors (including fundraising), the major, our outreach efforts, and some shared research. In 2013, I became the director of the EMBA and helped revamp the curriculum to be more centered on vertical leadership development. I have been involved with the Family Firm Institute since 1998, including being on their board of directors and earning two of their four awards. I speak and consult across the nation. Regarding my writing, beyond my two books, I have over 35 magazine articles, 11 academic journal articles, and two articles of note in the last year. I am proud of my (invited) chapter in a practioner’s journal that was published last December and a white paper on vertical leadership in higher education. Show less
