About Greg Mcmanus

I am an experienced museum director and tourism sector CEO, with over 30 years in leadership roles in New Zealand and internationally.I am currently leading the development of a new museum for Tauranga as part of the $305m development of a new civic precinct, Te Manawataki o Te Papa. The precinct will include a new library and community hub, civic whare, redeveloped art gallery and performing arts theatre. The museum is scheduled to open in 2028.From 2012-2022 I had the honour of being CEO of Waitangi National Trust, leading the development of two significant new museums from concept to completion and operation: Te Kōngahu Museum of Waitangi and Te Rau Aroha Museum of the Price of Citizenship. I led the transformation of Waitangi Treaty Grounds into a world class visitor destination, securing the financial sustainability of the organisation and enhancing the mana of the site as the most important historic place in Aotearoa New Zealand. Prior to Waitangi I was Director of Rotorua Museum Te Whare Taonga o Te Arawa for 15 years, leading a capital construction programme that completed the famous Bathhouse building to its original 1912 plans and transforming the museum into one of the most awarded visitor attractions in New Zealand. My key professional interest is driving transformational change in the museum and tourism sectors, creating compelling and meaningful visitor expeiences that are sustainable, repeatable and world class in their own right.
