Real-time event detection of water contamination by chemical, biological or radiological agents is essential for ensuring comprehensive water security. Following a contamination event, decontamination of the distribution system is accomplished by flushing, pigging and disinfecting the affected infrastructure. Event detection and treatment technologies are continuously evolving to keep the public safe from ever changing threats. Conducting these studies for the USEPA's Department of Homeland Security is both challenging and rewarding.
Project Scientist
Conducted studies to evaluate the effectiveness of various water-quality sensor technologies for the detection of chemical, biological and radiological contaminants in a pilot-scale DSS at the EPA T&E Facility. Works closely with software engineers to beta test data acquisition and reporting software. Is working with EPA to develop a sampling system with early warning capability for Homeland Security purposes.
Project Scientist
Served as the Task Supervisor responsible for the operation, maintenance, and calibration of a 17-station drinking water monitoring network (Water Security Initiative). Responsibilities included performing routine site visits, troubleshooting equipment issues, coordinating troubleshooting activities with various equipment vendors, providing verbal and written reports to EPA on a routine basis on the status of each monitoring station. Data from this prototype network was used to develop real-time event detection algorithms for drinking water security.

During this project, approximately 60,000 tons of hazardous and petroleum contaminated soils were safely removed and transported for proper disposal. Supervised daily operations during the remediation of a decommissioned petroleum refinery. Maintained site production records and employee health and safety records. Also operated heavy equipment including Moxy and Volvo end-dumps, Komatsu and Caterpillar excavators with various attachments. Assisted in the setup and operation of a concrete crushing plant that separated aggregate, fine particles and rebar. This plant crushed approximately 8,000 tons of concrete generated by the removal of building footers and foundations. Was responsible for real-time air monitoring to determine the level of protection necessary for worker safety and site control.
Senior Technician
Served as the field manager of several PSD monitoring networks. Maintained monitoring equipment and data acquisition systems for the measurement of TSP, PM10, CO, NO2, and O3. Conducted quarterly quality assurance performance audits for the criteria pollutants for clients in Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. Established a monitoring laboratory to assess the removal efficiency (by vacuum extraction) of gasoline from groundwater contaminated by leaking UST.Was responsible for managing industrial PSD monitoring projects in conjunction with permit applications to construct new or expand existing facilities. Supervised field activities at PSD monitoring stations in Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, and New York. Implemented quality assurance activities associated with PSD monitoring for criteria pollutants. Conducted the SUMMA canister sampler evaluations using Method TO-14 procedures in conjunction with the Baltimore TEAM study. More recently, conducted an Air Pathway Analysis study for the Seymour Superfund Site in Columbus, Indiana.
