About Greg Nelson
I am a doctoral candidate for a PhD in Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta. I am a registered professional engineer with APEGA and I hold a Masters of Science. In 2019, I won the Tri-agency Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS) and I was offered the NSERC CGS.My research interests are Fracture of Materials, Metallurgy, Steel, Pipeline Integrity, Corrosion, Micro-mechanics, and Environmentally-Assisted Cracking. My thesis will increase the current understanding of near-neutral pH stress corrosion cracking and develop remediation strategies for application in industry. The main application is the pipeline integrity of oil and gas lines which is also beneficial for any buried steel pipeline. My research considers the impact of corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen induced cracking, and classic fatigue. I worked in the industry for several years prior to my PhD. My industrial experience is in mainly Pipeline Integrity. I have spent over two years working on Pipeline Integrity including developing IRISNDT's in-house ILI verification. I worked on asset integrity management, performed metallurgical failure analysis, performed miscellaneous duties such as in-situ metallography, and materials characterization. I am an active volunteer in my local and professional community. I volunteer with local charities and community groups through my local church. I am a former chair of ASM international Edmonton Chapter and I continue to serve on the executive committee.
Listed skills include Scanning Electron Microscopy, Optical Microscopy, Materials Science, Characterization, and 13 others.
