I'm a papa and husband, an author and an entrepreneur, a ship's captain and an outdoors education facilitator, a leader and a collaborator, a camper and a meditator, and and and … I cofounded story lab Truly*Adventurous and am Executive Director of Onward Industries, a nonprofit whose mission is to build community outdoors. In that role I work with a diverse crew on projects that bring people into deep communion with the natural world and help spark joy and caring in a world that’s fueled by joy and caring.After a career writing for national magazines, I co-founded Truly*Adventurous, a media platform conceived in a spirit of adventure and built with reckless faith in the power of phenomenal true storytelling. Plugged into Hollywood, and with publishing partnerships around the globe, we nurture an ecosystem of talented journalists and writers and seed their stories across a diverse media landscape.I also write narrative nonfiction. My most recent book, Striking Gridiron (St. Martin's Press), is the true story of the steel strike of 1959 and a scrappy football team that went for a national record and buoyed spirits during a steel town's most trying days. Pittsburgh Steelers VP Art Rooney Jr. says, "This is the way a sports book should be written," and Pulitzer Prize winner Megan Marshall writes, "Not since Friday Night Lights has a writer portrayed a powerhouse high school football team and its coach as vividly as Nichols does."My storytelling wins awards and my work is frequently optioned for the screen and spun into engaging audio.
