Adira Foundation invested in better lives for people living with neurodegenerative diseases (ND). Their rapid growth (more than 30% by 2030) demands an urgent collective response. Adira’s solution was to build a super-layer of help to fund the dozens of issues people with ND share in common but are often funded late, if at all. Issues such as caregiving, navigation, disability, housing, isolation, loneliness, stigma, etc. We modeled successful large-scale integrated health efforts. We envisioned, in short, a Global Fund to Fight ALS, Alzheimer's, Huntington's, MS, and Parkinson's. We focused on those 5 principally, though not exclusively, for proof of concept. Our goal for patients and caregivers was to preserve 5 precious resources: time, energy, money, confidence, and relationships. I survived a high-speed cycling accident in Johannesburg, South Africa, ultimately requiring 12 reconstructive surgeries over four years. I appreciate the patient point-of-view. I also give care to two family members with ND. Adira never got the lift-off we wanted, having debuted right at the outset of the COVID pandemic. Our legacy website: https://adirafoundation.org details our accomplishments and sets a blueprint for action for the way forward.
